Letterston FTTP Rollout

[link to this post]

So I dug around on CodeLook regarding the fibre rollout for Letterston. Seems like cabinet P1 and a bunch of other areas are set for FTTP. While I'm not getting my hopes up and it might be a mistake entry, I may end up having to go with BT or being limited for choice at the end of the day if FTTP does happen.

We wanted to ditch EE for TalkTalk when the rollout completes, though they don't seem to be doing an FTTP service. And neither does EE, although as it goes right now, we'd better off on at least BT since the customer service on EE has been irritating for us.

Any recommendations?

This site here. I don't assume everything here is 100% accurate, though it has got me thinking about the situation.

No date is showing yet but a least its something hopeful!

It does state Phase BDUK CDS 12b whatever that measn?

Looks like from Aug 2015. This date needs to be treated with caution though.

I take it you're in quite a rural location?

Thanks for that site, never heard of it. It has my cabinet area down as FTTP. Our village has had a load of new poles installed in the last week which is what has started me wondering if we will be getting FTTP. Currently the telephone lines are on the electricity poles. Have you had anything similar going on ?

@Andy
Quite rural. Currently living 5km from the exchange and speeds don't generally get higher than 1mbps.

I won't take any dates for granted yet, since these things can change all the time.

Nothing yet, rollout doesn't start until March according to Superfast Cymru. I have noticed roadworks a couple weeks back where Openreach was installing a poly duct along Station Road in Letterston. Seems to be another duct being installed next week. They might just be preparing the area or so it seems.

Ok, I am in Pembs also. I want FTTP for the speed and future proofing but on the other hand I don't like the fact that there is so little choice of ISP's at the moment. I don't really understand why all ISP's don't offer a 40/10 or 80/20 service on FTTP,

Could be something to do with the costs involved from outsourcing to other ISPs, especially when there is limited coverage of FTTP. I'd be happy with even just 40/10 or 80/20.

Thanks for the site address.

Hmm, do you know what the percentage means at the end of the information?

On my listing its got P24, which is the cabinet, then 100%

Does the 100% mean its 100% full or something else?

Demon => Freeserve => Pipex => Be => Sky => BT Infinity 2

Yes I think I will probably go for 40/10 when it is available, as much as I would like to have the fastest connection possible, that would be more than adequate for now. Currently have around 6 Mbps so that would be a nice upgrade.

Do BT still list the FTTP packages ? can't find them on their site.

Some postcodes are serviced by more than one cabinet. The 100% means your postcode is completely served by P24.

My broadband basic info/help site - www.robertos.me.uk | Domains,site and mail hosting - Tsohost.
Connection - Plusnet UnLim Fibre (FTTC). Sync ~ 57.2/15.0Mbps @ 600m. - IPv4BQM IPv6BQM

They probably only list them if their checker shows you're in an FTTP enabled area. Luckily the price of BT Infinity 1/2 should be the same as FTTC, though I have no clear idea about Infinity 3/4 and any extra charges that might incur relating to FTTP.

So price for Infinity 3 (200mbps) is £39.65 and 4 (300mbps) is £50 per month. Not bad really.

Only other ISP's I have seen that provide FTTP then are A&A and Zen but both too expensive for me.

Only real option right now is BT then.

Seems fairly priced for such speeds.

Both Zen and A&A appear to have monthly usage limits, so I'll probably choose BT as well.

If you'd be happy with 40/10 you'd probably be even happier with 40/20 as that's what you'll get (or you can choose 80/20) if you decide to go with PlusNet for your FTTP.

They don't actually advertise the service but you can opt to go on their FTTP trial as long as you're an existing customer (i.e. sign up for ADSL first).

Yes I am not interested in anything with a usage limit, not that I use huge amounts. Think the most has been around 200 GB but bound to go up with a faster connection and don't like the idea of a limit.

You will need to ask to be put on the trial smile. You can't just "order" it.

It seems pretty certain anyone who has FTTP available to them will be accepted onto the trial, with very few exceptions; e.g. problems 'locally' with incomplete infrastructure build. wink

As an existing PN customer you're probably already on an 'Unlimited' account, so it may interest you to know there are no limits on the FTTP trial.

Yep, that's the one. Probably among a number of the buildings marked as Exchange Only within Letterston.
Can't get 21CN yet, so 8mbps is the fastest you could get in theory. And BT/TalkTalk are the only ones with equipment in the exchange right now.

TalkTalk

Then you should be able to get >8Mbps....they probably don't have their equipment in Letterston.

We had issues with our connection a few months back or so, cutting us off more than not. It was just a pain in the backside going through EE trying to get the problem solved. Took them way too long to identify that the fault was at the DSLAM, as well as having to talk to someone in India to even get through the process.

At least the Openreach engineer who came round to examine the situation told us that TalkTalk did. If it's not the case, then it's probably a mistake.

Update on Letterston Works

[re: deleted] [link to this post]

So far so good, work in the exchange area looks like it is gaining pace. Cabinet 4 DSLAM has been stood, although no telling when this will be enabled, since there's no noise from it yet.

Roadwork plans are showing up for July near the cab locations for 1 and 5, there's a chance they're passing on their initial FTTP plans, although I can't be sure since it doesn't mention DSLAM or NGA cabinet yet.

For #1:
Build 1 concrete chamber 1690mm x 710mm x 1565mm deep in Footway,Install 3m of 2 poly ducts in Footway,Install 3m of 2 poly ducts in Verge,Install 7m of 2 poly ducts in Carriageway.

But if they were to go for FTTC now on cab 5, then Castlemorris and a few other spots aren't likely to get superfast speeds, because they are too far away from that cabinet. Similar issue with cab 1, only a portion of the area might be able to get superfast speeds at all. The Welsh Gov states they intend to get superfast to as many properties as possible even after Superfast Cymru, so hopefully those white postcodes won't be overlooked.
