So I decided to get hold of a HG612 to replace the Business Hub as I have my own Wireless set up.
The modem has been reset and if I use Lan 2 I can get into the HG612 on the default IP address. It's got SP10 firmware on there at the moment (although may put on the SP08 as recommended by some.
However.. the router address on Lan 1 is reporting as 172.16.12.10 for some reason. (Thats despite making sure the IP address is showing as 192 .. etc )
Any ideas ?

What range have you set your router to operate on?
Private IPs can be 192.168.xx.xx 172.16.xx.xx 10.xx.xx.xx Most equipment pushed at te domestic/residential market is preset to 192.168. although Thomson originally used 172.16. and other 10.0.
Go and check the ranges you have set in the router - then decide if that is what you want or change it, then set the modem to match.

I think if you look at the unlocked firmware you will see it is version 28SP10. The latest is 30SP08. The older one doesn't support G.INP, the latest one does.
The IP address of LAN1 doesn't really matter, it doesn't need to be on the router's subnet. The IP address on LAN2 I would expect to be allocated by the router, unless you (sensibly) give it a static one on the router's subnet and exclude it from the router's allocatable range.

Well at this point my routers not the issue as far as I can see (I run my internal network on 10.x though)
Not sure if I wasn't clear, but the HG612 appears to be serving its IP address as the 172.16.12.xx one even though in the set up I told it to got to 192.xx etc
So I am trying to figure out why the HG612 would ignore the settings I have told it to use. DHCP is off, so to be honest I was expecting it to have the IP address that I set it to have.. and not some seemingly random one.

Hang on. You are on 10.x, HG612 LAN1 is 172,16.x and HG612 LAN2 is 192.x?
Hmmm.
You do still have the HG612 in bridge mode I hope?

Have you set the address on the HG612 - Login, Basic, LAN, LAN host Setting, Submit.
Where are you seeing the 172.16.12.xx address? Is it visible on any of the HG612 pages?
I have a thought - which may be a total red herring and don't want to say anything yet.

I am using an Airport Extreme (Connecting via PPPoE) as my router and Airport Utility which is showing the IP address of the router as the 172.16.xx
But I did set the address of the HG612 in the LAN host setting and its in there ok.. when I go back and look its still there. When I connect to the HG612 via Lan 2 then I can access the 192.168.xx default ok.
When I change my NIC to 172.16.xx address I can't access the modem so something seems a little strange.
I still get internet access ok.. but its vexing me as to why it should even show a 172.16 address to the Airport Extreme

Yep.. as per my other reply yes its in Bridge mode or I'd be having problems...
There's no other setting for LAN1's IP address though is there ? Have I missed something ?
This shouldn't be hacked firmware either.. I hadn't got that far yet !
I'll check the full firmware version but its an SP10 for sure although I know 08 is the later released one.
Regards PGre
|
|
|
|
It shouldn't be giving / showing any address on LAN1 if it's set as bridge mode... weird!
|
|
|
|
If the firmware wasn't hacked, you wouldn't be able to access LAN2 as it would be firewalled.
The address on LAN1 shouldn't matter.
Sounds like you have a half-hacked HG612. I recommend you apply the B030SP08 firmware and then set it up properly.

Certainly the previous owner has set it up in an unusual way. I wouldn't want it on my system till I'd cleaned it up.

It is possible to set it up in a sort of half bridged mode where the HG612 can create the PPPOE session and passthrough an IP to a router.
|
|
|
Well the original owner says it wasn't unlocked and was just a stock BT device.
I can't even get it to take the SP08 firmware for some reason.
It won't reset and I can't get back into the menu.
I'll see if I can get it replaced as it does seem a little strange.

I suggest once you have removed it you run your standard antivirus full system scan, and following that the latest version of Malwarebytes.
Probably nothing to worry about, but I'm damn sure that what I would be doing.

I can't even get it to take the SP08 firmware for some reason. Probably the anti-virus or firewall on your PC or ad blocker software on your browser It won't reset and I can't get back into the menu. Did you reset it then? Something must have happened to cause it to stop.
Which menu? You mean the web interface?
If you had it connected to the internet, it may be being upgraded by BTAgent.
|
|
|
I am using a Mac.. and don't have an ad blocker on the browser I was using.
But the reset button doesn't seem to work now..
I can't get into the Web interface (or TN either).
Didn't have it connected to the web to rule out the BTAgent issues.
I'll have to give it another try later..
Regards PGre
|
|
|
|
So it just stopped allowing access on it's own? Odd.
|
|
|
Yes.. it seems that way... no matter how I tried to push the reset button it wouldn't let me see the Web interface on Lan 2. (I am assuming you are never able to see the interface on Lan 1).
I'd previously tried to upload the 08 firmware and that had let me get to the upload page, the modem then rebooted etc.. but then I couldn't get in again and also can't access it to try and flash the firmware again.
Very strange..
Regards PGre
|
|
|
|
Sounds like you may have flashed it to the latest firmware
So what IP addresses have you tried?
|
|
|
The locked one I assume you mean?

As part of the unlock process, you assign a static IP address to your network card, connect the modem via LAN2 and then browse to the IP address that you assume the modem has.
I'm asking what IP addresses have been assigned to the LAN card and what IP addresses have been assumed to be on the modem?

I assumed (possibly wrongly) that it would default to 192.168.1.1 which doesn't work and also 172.16.12.10 which doesn't work.
Didn't think about trying others.. mainly since I didn't ask it to be a specific value... any ideas ?

|
|
What did you set your PC network card to in those cases? 192.168.1.xxx or 172.16.12.xxx ?
I am wondering if when connected, you open a CMD window and then try ARP -a ...... not saying it will work but maybe worth a try.

Well I tried both.. 192.168.1.xx and 172.etc just in case.
I'll have to have a look whats in the ARP cache again when I try and flash the Modem.

Did you do this? - Power off the modem.
- Connect your PC directly to the LAN2 socket.
- Configure the ethernet NIC of your PC with IP address 192.168.1.100
- Press the RESET button on the modem and keep it pressed.
- Do not release the button yet.
- Power on the modem.
- Keep the RESET button pressed for a further five seconds.
- Use your browser to visit the modem's web address http://192.168.1.1/
|
|

Yup.. as per instructions on the Kitz site (and elsewhere).
That did work originally.. but I can't get it to work now for some reason.
It's like the reset button is broken (although it doesn't look damaged physically)

Well I thought that originally but I was happy with Telnet Access if I could get it.. but at the moment as per other reply I can't even get the HG612 to take new firmware.

As MHC says, use the GUI version. Same as the "unlocked" one but plus a GUI which is far simpler for many things. You only need to telnet for detailed stuff.
From what I gather from your posts, the AirportExtreme is on 172.16.xx.xx, so once you have the modem flashed you could change it (the modem) to the same subnet and run its LAN2 to an Extreme LAN port. Then you can access it through the router just like anything else. Make sure you give it an address outside the Extreme's DHCP allocation range.

Well .. after some persistence I eventually managed to get the firmware updated.
I can now get access to the router (Both TN and Gui).
No idea why it wouldn't take it.. I had to try the same process about 5 times (at least) before it finally allowed me to update the firmware again.
That said the Lan 1 IP address is still shown as 172.16.xx despite the Lan host being set to another internal address.
Next challenge is getting the EE Signal box I have working again... thats another story.

If the modem is in bridge mode you are seeing the IP address of the gateway. Mine is 172.16.15.129

Exactly what I was thinking - this is the ISP side IP address for the PPPoE and not something the end user needs to worry about.

Well mine isn't the same but as it's ISP driven I wouldn't expect that.. (its still 172.16.xx etc) what I wasn't expecting was an internal IP address for the router which isn't set by the router...I think it just threw me as I don't ever remember seeing that the last time I had FTTC set up.
By the way do you have the HG612 Bridge Type as IP-Bridge or PPPoe_Bridge.
Default seems to be IP but doesn't seem to make much difference from what I can tell.

WHoa!
I've just had a disconnection for some reason. The reason I expect I shall never know, but my HG612 was still in sync, unchanged speeds, so it wasn't that.
The Internet light on my router had gone out, so in the GUI I disconnected it (it was showing connected), and reconnected.
I got a 172.20.xx.xx IP address rather than my expected Static IP address!
Powered it off, waited a bit. Powered on. Just the same.
Powered off, then powered off the HG612. Waited 30 seconds and repowered the HG612. Waited till that finally had sync - as the Lan1 light does go steady early on, then start a second phase of rapid flickering before finally stabilising.
Powered up my router and got my expected static IP address.
I don't know if that may help, but have you tried that exact sequence? Particularly not reacting to the first steadying of the Lan1 light.
