Should I expect more from FTTC?

[link to this post]

Hi there,

I recently upgraded from ADSL to FTTC as it was on offer from my current provider and it was included with calls etc. (TalkTalk but was AOL)

I live about 1.5 miles from the exchange and I was getting around 2.5MB on tests on ADSL and I am getting about the same... maybe 3MB at times... I had some one come out and BT's expected speed was around 6-7MB which would have been fantastic really but sadly nothing could be done as the testing devices didn't work at my home.

Should I be annoyed or is that all I should expect being so far from the exchange? I was hoping for a little it more to be honest.

MegaBytes or Megabits? 3MB is a reasonable speed.

How far are you from the cabinet that serves you - actual road distance rather than straight line.

Can you provide a set of stats for the line.

The fact their test kit did not work supports idea this is not a fault but a very long line.

Do you know the exchange name and cabinet, then can show you where cabinet is and you can estimate distance to it, if it is 1.5 miles then yes would urge caution that it might not be faster than ADSL.

The assumption here is that MB means Mega bits per second (Mbps)

Whichever SpeedTest reports. I will have to post it when I get home as I cannot recall what it says. I presume Mbps.

I think it is 1.7 miles I was told.

I obviously did not expect the 17Mb advertised but had hoped an improvement on the existing speed.

You mention 1.5/1.7 to the exchange which is not relevant for FTTC it is the premises to cabinet distance that dictates the speed. So, unless your cabinet is actually at the exchange, it should be a lot shorter.

Can you post details of the DSL Checker output - everything except your phone number.

Yes I did think the cabinet was nearer which was my confusion but that checker does not work as we are not with BT. It is still well over a mile I would say.
I have used my neighbours address as that came up.

Is the neighbour on the same cabinet as you, as no way that the estimate they are seeing represents a cabinet that is well over a mile away.

You can use the address checker even if on LLU, only the phone number lookups don't work.

What exchange and cabinet was listed in for the neighbour, and compare to what is listed for you.

If you were expecting an advertised speed of 17 Mbps that coincidentally is the speed that ADSL2+ is sold at, and the upgrade you have bought may actually just have been from ADSL of AOL to ADSL2+ with TalkTalk and is NOTHING to do with FTTC at all.

No way is your neighbour a mile from the cabinet! With those forecasts probably nearer 650 to 800metres

Are you in a row of houses? If so what do two or three each side say based on their phone numbers?

The checker should still work based on your ADDRESS. Go to the checker, slect address option and just enter the postcode, it will then give a drop down list of addresses - yours should be there.

See my earlier reply - suspect user is really just upgraded to ADSL2+ from ADSL, which explains the minimal change in speeds.

I did the address lookup and their house came up, which is number 2 and I am number 1.
My address was not listed, just number 2 but it is the same distance bar a few metres of telephone wire from the road.

They will be on the same cabinet as we are a semi detatched house in the middle of nowhere with only a few other houses dotted along the road haha... I dont expect much but it was sold as fibre (FTTC) broadband.
I know those numbers are unrealistic...

Thanks so far. smile

According to the image, it says you can get FTTP (lucky you!). Why not go for that?

The image says FTTPoD - not FTTP. FTTPoD is not currently available to order and could be very expensive.

What hardware have you go installed in the house?

Can you access it to get line stats?

I originally had a BT Business Hub as it held the ADSL connection quite well but now I have the Talk Talk equipment plugged in that they gave us. It has better wireless range so thought why not...

I cannot access currently but can this evening.

Erm I think it is like £22 at the moment as we are long standing AOL customers so got all kinds of stuff chucked in like the calls etc but its the standard Fibre Medium product underneath it all really.

Do you know the TT equipment model numbers?

That, plus line stats should give a better understanding and confirm/refute Mr S's comment on te possibility of you having ADSL2+

So ignoring the calls etc you are paying possibly £10 per month for the fibre medium for 18 months, then £15 per month, calls and voice line rental will add to this, e.g. line rental is £16.70 per month.

£22 per month fits in more with free ADSL2+ for 18 months, then £5 per month plus voice line rental at £16.70.

Another possibility is that they've shifted you onto their ADSL2+ platform temporarily and will upgrade you to FTTC shortly.

If you want an assessment of your address to cabinet relationship then private message the address or just postcode and will do our checking http://labs.thinkbroadband.com/local is a simplified version, but I can go down to more detail away from the simpler checker.

That is the router. They have a newer one now I think.

We have Fibre Medium (Up to 38Mb). I am looking at the online account section right now. I made a mistake with 17. It is called SimplyBroadband with Superpowered Fibre

Numbers look like adsl speeds what is needed is connection data from the router and what dsl mode it is connecting at

Is your Talk Talk router connected to the master socket ? I pretty much doubled my in-law's speeds by ditching their dongle filters and connecting the router to the master socket along with a VDSL MK3 faceplate.

Not looking great then. Sounds like they've tied you in to an 18 month contract for pretty much no gain in speeds. Got 3G or 4G in your area? Would probably be faster.

It is cheaper than before and has a good phone deal which is the only reason we changed. I expected this would happen ahead of changing but a tad disappointing all the same!

Okay if all the wiring is connected correctly and a phone also still works then you really do seem to have a very long line, of the 2km distance to the cabinet variety, rare but some poor devil has to have fit into that small demographic.

To rule out line errors if you want share your postcode in a private message and will assess things, or just try http://labs.thinkbroadband.com/local which should give a cautionary note for long VDSL2 lines

What you need to determine is the distance from your house to the cabinet, this can be deduced from your postcode using Google Maps

Would just confirm which cabinet its exact location and your distance to it, so a more detailed manual check than what the local site does. So probably more just a verification of what I've done already but always nice to have random areas to check and verify.
