FTTP coming before christmas?

[link to this post]

As GF was leaving the house today she encountered a chap resting (his clipboard?) on our bin which was on side of road. On asking he said he was surveying for internet to come up our road (she's not very into tech, so I guess it was fibre), it was to come underground to pole then up the pole, this is also how our copper comes. We already have FTTC but at a measly 4MB, so this must be extension from cabinet to get us up to 'superfast', I'm not sure if this would be FTTP going overhead from pole, or FTTPoD with a 'pod' on the pole.
Apparently he works for a sub contracted company to Openreach, and he said we should expect the work to be done prior to Christmas, I asked her if it was Kelly but she couldn't recall who it was but didn't think it was Kelly. She could however tell me all about where he lived and his journey this morning! We all have our different interests wink

So what do we think? FTTP or FTTPoD? is Christmas likely?

Not wishing to cast aspersions, but FTTPoD isnt what you are describing ....

Fibre to remote node isnt happening.

Might be FTTP though ..... cross everything.

FTTP and FTTPoD are the same technology. In both cases, the fibre runs right the way into your house. If there's a "pod" on the pole, it's just a passive distribution point, somewhere to allow the fibre to be joined.

The difference between FTTP and FTTPoD is who pays and when it's installed.

In the first case, OpenReach might have decided to deploy FTTP along your own whole street, at their own expense. This is possible, especially if you're in one of the cities that OR has flagged as "Fibre First".

In the second case, one of your neighbours has shelled out a load of cash to get FTTPoD installed. If so, and you're on exactly the same distribution point (e.g. served by the same pole) then you may be lucky and find that FTTP is available to you afterwards. This scenario is very unlikely, since only 20 FTTPoD services are delivered per month across the whole UK.

In both cases, if and when it becomes available, you'll still have to place an order for FTTP. Your existing FTTC will not be replaced automatically. If you do nothing, you'll just remain on your 4M copper.

When you place an order for FTTP, an engineer will come and run the final length of fibre into your house (drilling through the wall if necessary) and install the Optical Network Termination box which the fibre ends on, and which your router will plug into (with a copper ethernet cable).

Bit of brain fade there, yes should have been FTTrN, but if that's been shelved then it must be FTTP, although how that will work out being a TalkTalk customer I don't know, what's the odds will still have to wait until contract runs out which won't be that far short of 2020 when I'd be asking for 10MB+ anyway.

How it will work as a talktalk customer?

Simple - unless TalkTalk start to sell the gea-fttp service you will need to switch providers.

If you've just signed up to a two-year contract with TT then that's bad luck. You can either buy yourself out, or keep them as a backup connection until the contract runs out.

Talktalk don't sell OpenReach FTTP yet.
If you just signed up to 1 of their 18/24 month contracts you may be stuck.

They have started selling G.Fast recently and as Sky have just announced they are to sell FTTP/G.Fast from OpenReach then it may not be long till Talktalk jump on the FTTP bandwagon.

Your copper line will remain in place.
Fibre will be ran to the top of the pole where they will put a fibre DP (distribution point).
There is no automatic upgrade to fibre and only those who order a compatible FTTP service will have the final piece of fibre installed from the pole top to property.

And that now OR have asked CPs from 20th September to hold back on any new orders as there has "excessive demand" for the service exceeding their resources could mean an even longer wait if that was to happen.

At least it tells Openreach (and BT Group) the old adage. Supply can create demand.

My broadband basic info/help site - www.robertos.me.uk. Domains, site and mail hosting - Tsohost.
Connection - AAISP Home::1 80/20. 200GB. Sync 68260/12818Kbps @ 600m. BQMs - IPv4 & IPv6

At beginning of year BT and BDUK indicated there would be quite some time before my line might be upgraded, so when in march a good deal was available from TT I signed up to a 18 month deal, if the work is completed by chrismas that will leave 9 months of contract, but what are the odds of them doing work on time.

Fingers crossed the Sky deal will have TT getting onboard with BT FTTP, although with the 'new' CEO I think short term profits are taking presidance over long term.

Well despite being a 'couple' of miles from home I found out my road was being worked on last week, sounds like the fibre has now been installed, I'll know for certain next month.
Now it seems I need TalkTalk to get on board with BT fibre or I'll be leaving them at end of contract, if not before if the cost of getting out of contract is not too high, or I suppose I could even add fttp on top of what I already have, when I get home I'll have to investigate.

Bit of an update, came home couple of weeks ago and have been trying to find out what was going on, the bank and further up road had been worked on, but no sign of anything on pole, couldn't get an answer from any source.
Well today a OR engineer was at chamber next to our pole, it appears that new ducting has been laid ready for fibre, but not expected for several months

Vans just turned up outside, chamber open and duct is being checked for fibre to go in and up the pole.

This morning they came back and fixed the fibre to the pole, as seen here to left of pole taken from directly below where my copper line fixes to house.

This leaves me with the question, how will I find out when I can get fibre to the house?

When the Openreach checker says you can get it, then the retailers should be ready to take an order

Keep checking the wholesale availability checker, wait until it says WBC FTTP available.

Today doing my regular check and I notice that the FTTPoD has jumped from 330 to 1000Mbps, not sure if this is the 'new standard' or it reflects work done in the area.

BT Wholesale are now selling 1000/220 and 500/165. It seems that whenever your database entry gets touched for any reason, that's what it gets set to.

Not at present. According to the info in this thread, BTW have suspended sales of their 500 Mbps & 1000 Mbps FTTP services to CPs for the time being which probably explains why its almost impossible to find any CP selling such services nationwide on BTW tails. Only CPs which have their own tails/LLU network such as Spectrum Internet & Syscomm offer the 500/1000 Mbps on Openreach FTTP and these are in very, very few areas in S Wales & E Midlands.

What it says is 1 stage so the install would be a 1 stage process . Delivered via a connectorised infrastructure rather 2 stage blown fibre variant.

And today the first house down our road has FTTP installed, so that's just over 7 months from the survey. What is odd to my mind, is that there has been no publicity for the service, we only found out by asking workers what was going on, and as much of the work was only done at daytime during the working week many might not know that it has been installed.
I've been looking at my options and BT 55/10 would give me the service I want and a reasonable price point, although today I've heard two stories of bad service from BT which makes even TalkTalk look good. Sky might have been a contender, but whilst they said they would use BT FTTP, they don't as yet seem to offer it.

Well you can let your ISP know that you are interested in getting fibre when it becomes available, and when it becomes available they should notify you when you can upgrade / order it.

We are with BT and have been for a while, going from ADSL2+ right to FTTP.
BT was very fast to try and resolve the issues we had over copper for ADSL2+ sadly the issues couldn't be resolved, but thats not BT's fault but the state of the cable.

Whenever we have had any issues with either our phone or broadbad all it took was a phone call to them and explain the issues and they have always been resolves within 10 working days.

Sure I have also heard people have had issues with BT, but I could say the exact same thing with every other ISP.

But I have always got on ok with BT Staff and they Engineers that I have seen and spoke to in the past.

The nabour who got FTTP is a BT customer and got a email from them informing of the new fibre, she actually had no idea it had been laid!
Strikes me that the OR engineers could be walking up the road posting info cards instead of sitting in a van 'half of the day' reading a paper smile
As for the reports of bad service, I did take them with a pinch of salt as although the person telling me is nice enough he's a bit nave.
