I have renewed my contract today and got a discount on the faster fibre speed boost and the new Wi-fi hub should arrive in a few days, my router is showing a link rate of 9994/39999 Kbps is this because i am on a capped package or is this the fastest i am likely to get, my current speeds seem to vary between 24 and 30 Mbps.
|
|
|
The 39999 suggests modem is hitting the capped speed of the 40/10 product, if you just upgraded to Fibre boost today then once the order is complete you might see it change
Assuming when you say speeds vary 24 to 30 Mbps you are talking about speed test results

Thanks, Yes those are speed test results taken with the TBB test and the 9994/39999 is always the same, is there a way of finding out what the maximum my line is likely to achieve?

Yep, sounds like you're on a 40/10 package. Have a look in your router stats for "attainable speed" and you may see what you could get by paying a bit more.

I cannot find "attainable speed" its the D-Link 3782 Super Router if thats any help these are the only figures i can find.
SNR Margin: 15.6 dB / 19.8 dB
Line Attenuation: 0.1 dB / 10.4 dB
Output Power: 5.4 dbm / 5.0 dbm
Data Rate: 9994 kbps / 39999 kbps
|
|
|
|
Your SNR margin suggests the full 80Mb would be achievable.
|
|
|
Ways to find out...
1. Max attainable figure from modem
2. BT Wholesale checker gives a set of speed range figures (use address option)
3. What speeds did TalkTalk give you as an estimate for the boost

Thanks j0hn83 i have read a few moans about the boost speed being little better than the original non boosted speed so i am glad to read this i guess as is usually the case people often moan about a service but rarely post when things are better than expected.
I will post my speed test tomorrow in case others are thinking of taking up this offer.

1 - Cannot find it (see earlier post)
2 - Could you post a link as i can only find the BT speed check.
3 - It was online chat i think they said max 63 Mbps but i don't think they gave an estimate, they did say i can cancel within 30 days if not happy with the speed.

Go to this site https://www.dslchecker.bt.com/ and click Address Checker to find out what the FTTC Range A Clean are for the max speed.
You already just beaten me as you just found it. OK, your max speed are likely to be between 57 and 80

U can ask TalkTalk to upgraded u on 80/20 instead of 40/10.

For some people to speed improvement is minimal but from what we have seen you do seem to be inline for a big jump

Thanks my fingers are crossed, £2.50 on top of my old faster fibre contract and my new Wi-fi hub is being delivered tomorrow by courier (just received their text) so one happy TT customer here (you don't read that often)
I will update this when i get the new router and the boost has been enabled.

Well, just to forewarn of a common complaint .
If you don't get an immediate improvement (up and down) switch the router off for a minimum of 30 minutes. This "forces" a new session, and hopefully re-initialises the line for 80/20.
Most people do not have to do this, but occassionally it is necessary and will be TT's first request if there are performance issues.
|
|
|

I assume Talktalk ask this to be done for their internal IP profiling and is just a standard request they ask of everyone.
OpenReach changing the line profile to 80/20 will not need a resync or any sort of power down of the modem.
A change of the DLM profile immediately initiates a resync with the new profile.
|
|
|
Sorry - they do not ask everyone.
Normally it is not needed, but just every so often DLM seems to "get stuck" and not fully complete the line regrade. Quite often the upstream performance improves immediately whilst the downstream remains at 40/10 levels. The power cycling usually corrects this.
Probably the difference between how things work in theory and how they work in practise.

I turned the old router off and plugged the new one in and left it off for more than 30 mins the router stats are below but the speed test result is not much better than when i had he capped package, could anyone advise thanks.

Those results look ok for a 80/20 sync. Out of interest what does AAISP's tester give you?

Probably down to the routing your line takes to TBB's tester - if other testers give you expected results then you've got nothing to worry about.
I always say never treat TBBs tester as gospel, especially now that speedtest.net offers both multi and single thread tests on every Ookla server. FWIW the TBB tester never gives me more than 150 Mbps on my 330 Mbps line yet every other speedtest - incl both single & multi thread tests on multiple speedtest.net servers - easily churns out > 300 Mbps. I gave up a long time ago wondering why the TBB tester always gives me strange results

Are you saying speedtest.net is the most reliable test?
Yes, since you can choose from multiple servers - all operated by different hosts. I would also say the AAISP tester is very reliable for multi-thread tests.
