FTTP - Move from BT to Aquiss

[link to this post]

I'm about to move to save costs.

I'm told that the connection and speeds i receive won't change as its only a cosmetic change in that Aquiss will be looking after my openreach connection instead of BT. Aquiss tell me that the circuit will be routed via their network - what is meant by this, will affect my current ping rates etc ??

I'm aware that the service may differ in terms of support etc

So your connection will be routed to Aquiss home gateway rather than your previous service providers one.

There is a fair chance that pretty much all of the route will remain unchanged, so you shouldnt see any huge difference. Mind you, if you do, youll be 99% sure what the cause is.

Your ping times once you move to Aquiss will almost certainly change, whether +/- or by how much, you won't know until you've migrated. But any difference will be small, nothing to be concerned over.

This is what I'm getting to 8.8.8.8 on 3 different FTTP lines:

BT >> 17ms
FluidOne >> 19ms
Trunk >> 25 ms shocked

Make of that what you will smile

Great, I'm going to give it a go - current ping is between 6ms -18ms. I'm saving over £20 so i need to do something.

Understood, but have you called BT to ask if they can match or better Aquiss' pricing? Unlike some smaller CPs, BT can offer substantial discounts over the phone in exchange for a 12+ month commitment.

With a Gigaclear connection I get:

Ping statistics for 8.8.8.8:
Packets: Sent = 4, Received = 4, Lost = 0 (0% loss),
Approximate round trip times in milli-seconds:
Minimum = 3ms, Maximum = 3ms, Average = 3ms

Where you live in the country makes the biggest difference. Highest ping times will be in Scotland as the traffic has to travel down to (usually) London or Manchester, depending on what you're pinging of course.

Speed of light in fibre is about 2/3 c, i.e. 200km per millisecond; and it's a round trip so expect a millisecond for every 100km. That's not the only source of delay, but it's one you can't improve on.

You would probably be better off going with TalkTalk directly. Same thing but cutting out two middle men = cheaper.

So where is the Google equipment that is responding to the pings?
