Re: Slow Wi-Fi.

[re: MrSaffron] [link to this post]

I am going round in circles on the support forum i am convinced the router will not go faster than 21 Mbps there are hundreds of posts about it but they are saying thisis not the case

I even posted this review of the HG633 but they said it was not a good review, i have been testing most of the day and have re-named 2.4 and 5 GHz SSID so i can connect to either as advised so i can connect to the fastest and still cannot get above 21 Mbps, i have asked for a new router to test.

By Edward ChesterApril 5, 2017.

In addition, it becomes evident the Wi-Fi tech used here is fairly basic, despite its use of dual-band (5GHz and 2.4GHz) and the latest AC Wi-Fi standard. In tests this router came a distant last, although I reiterate that some other ISP-provided routers will perform just as poorly.

Using the 5GHz band, this router maxed out at just 21.3MB/sec, which compares to 60.1MB/sec for the next slowest AC router Ive tested. In our two further tests the router managed 9.3MB/sec (5m away, with two walls between the router and the Wi-Fi receiver) and 9.6MB/sec (7m away, with two walls in between and a floor down). Again, these figures are dwarfed by the next worst on test, which managed 37.8MB/sec and 13.5MB/sec.

Moving to the generally slower 2.4GHz band and the difference is more modest, as even the fastest routers can only hit around 20MB/sec. Nonetheless, the HG633 managed only 7.6MB/sec, 6.2MB/sec and 4.7MB/sec; the next worst recorded 11.9MB/sec, 7.8MB/sec and 6.8MB/sec.

These figures pale even in comparison to other ISP-provided routers, with the likes of the BT Home Hub 5 hitting 50MB/sec+ in our AC tests. In fact, even the old TalkTalk Super Router, the HG635, performed reasonably well, so its clear just how inadequate the HG633 is. Moreover, if you go out and spend £50-£100 on a third-party router youre likely to benefit from a huge leap in performance.

Note that the review you quote states 21.3MB/s rather than the 21Mbps you are seeing, an eight fold difference.

Doh i didn't realise i had already posted that and MrS had already mentioned that, so ignoring the stats in the review i still find it hard to believe so many are having the exact same wi-fi problem, below are a few quotes from the support site and there are hundreds of them.

Today I have installed Wi-Fi analizer i have moved to un-congested channels, renamed SSID so i can differentiate between 2.4 and 5 GHz and done more speed tests than i have done in months and i am still stuck under 22 Mbps when my wired speeds are 37 Mbps.

-----------

I've been having problems with the router since I first got it. Over ethernet there is no problem, but the WiFi is terrible.
Both my son's phone and mine will not work over WiFi, both are different makes so it's not a problem with the phone.
We are lucky to get 20mbps down over wifi when will easily get 40mbps over ethernet.
My father had the same router but replaced his with a Draytek unit and now miraculously he gets WiFi all over his house at twice the speed of the TalkTalk router.
When are TalkTalk going to acknowledge that there is a serious problem with the routers?
---------------
My HG633 seems incapable of a download throughput on WiFi of anything more that the high 20's
It has been like this since the day it was installed
-------------
I get around the 20 Mbps myself, and it's frustrating to even watch a 720p YouTube video, let alone a 480p one aha - WiFi is just terrible with this new "Super" Router.
-------------
I currently have a HG633 router with firmware versions V1.22t. My download speed varies from 8 to 20Mbps when connected wirelessly.
------------
I have had to turn my router off again this morning for 45 mins as the connection speed was very slow. On running a speed test using supportal-test.co.uk after turning back on the download speed was 5.46Mbps and upload was 3.69Mbps. The best that I ever get is arround 20Mbps on a line where i was informed that i could get about 35Mbps.

Just connected my old Huawei HG633 from when I was with Talktalk last November. LAN file transfer between my Samsung S5 and Windows 10 PC using 5Ghz I'm getting a steady 6.7MB/s (53.6Mb), about 10m away from the router in a different room.

You've cited that poor review as proof the device performs poor. I agree that it's not the best ISP supplied modem/router. However you've made a huge error in reading the test results. The slowest speed achieved in that review was 4.7MB/s, that's 37.6Mb. It is capable of much more than the maximum speed you are getting, something is probably configured incorrectly.

I don't know how you are only getting 20Mb (2.5MB/s) from a clean 5Ghz channel. Have you tried the same device you are using for the wireless test with a different wireless router? Most of the time wireless throughput problems are down to congested channels, or hardware limitations of the receiving device.

If it's a Windows PC/Laptop or an Android phone it tells you what speed the devices are connected together at. What device are you using and what does it say the device is synced to the HG633 router at?

HG633? If so, that is the problem, they cap at around 25Mbps even on 5Ghz (IN MY EXPERIENCE).

Get a HG635 problem will vanish (ebay around £20 - £30). Stop wasting effort playing around with the router. TalkTalk are starting to supply more d-links now, which are good but quite poor range compared to HG635.

Unfortunately i don't have a spare router but i have read that members using non TAlkTalk routers suddenly find the wireless speed is much higher, i may just take the earlier advice and get a HG635 i would love to be able to prove the TT HG633 is not capable of higher speeds.

Thanks, all the info is in the thread below, i am getting 37Mbps from my PC using Ethernet all my other devices including wife and sons are giving the same upper limit in the low 20's.

All the infoand screen shots can be found here - https://community.talktalk.co.uk/t5/Fibre-Broadband/...

I tried out 3 HG633 before biting the bullet and getting a HG635.

I find the range on the 635 better than a BT Smarthub, I can get 400Mbps over wifi on the 635 and only 23 on the 633 in my home (bursts to 60).

I'm no longer with Talktalk but sadly left my HG635 at the old property.

All I can say is I believe it'll solve your issues assuming you have good signal and equipment is AC ready.

Just read your post on the Talktalk forums, makes me laugh.

I'm sure someone else on the forum has gigabit speed wireless on that device smile

So you think as i suspect they are giving customers with poor wi-fi speeds the runaround?
