Cab identification

[link to this post]

Hey wise people.

We've just had these 3 new cabs put up on our road, and wondering if you could help me identify what they are and what their purpose is?

Cabs

Also when looking at the Community fibre page it says:
Fibre not available
You are connected to Reading Spencers Wood via an 'EO (Exchange Only) line'. Faster broadband is not available to you yet, the first cabinets in your area are expected to be upgraded by the end of the year.

Does this mean we should get g.fast or FTTP by the end of the year?
I spoke to @OpenreachHelp and they said:
Thanks for the details there, unfortunately the cabinet you line is connected to looks to be 800mtrs away from your address ( the way the cable runs ) G.fast sadly only works up to 200 -250 mtrs from the cabinet, we are also not seeing any plans at this time for FTTP to you address.

So I guess G.Fast is out for me, so im hoping for FTTP.

Cheers thought as much.

So nothing to help with FTTP lol.
And the message about upgrades for the end of the year?
Do you think its worth getting a FTTPoD quote?

Probably the time when the cabinets are expected to be live.

Do you think its worth getting a FTTPoD quote?
Given the sums of money involved only you can answer that.

I thought otherwise due to the EO upgrade, have not had time to go digging for age/status of cab 15

Sounds like your EO line is being moved onto an FTTC cab, at which point you'll be able to upgrade from ADSL to FTTC.

I don't think you can get a quote for FTTPoD unless you're already in an FTTC-covered area: check your phone number in the wholesale checker and see if it says whether FTTPoD is available.

https://btwholesale.com/adslchecker/

Even if you're right next to the FTTC cabinet, it doesn't mean FTTPoD will be cheap. The FTTP network is not routed via cabinets. The cabinet may be served by a fibre aggregation node which is some distance away - and your FTTPoD would have to go back to the same aggregation node.

However, if you're right next to the G.fast cabinet you showed, then maybe G.fast will be a usable option for you. Don't bother unless it's less than 200m away though.

Thanks for the replies guys.

Apparently I'm 800m away from the FTTC G.Fast cab.
So thats out for me frown

Cab 15 has just been upgraded in Dec from a really old small PCP to this double Standard PCP and then they attached the G.Fast pod.

But the other 2 PCP and FTTC are brand new.
I did have FTTPoD before and now its gone from adsl wholesale.

Guess I'll wait a little longer and see what happens.
But another question, does full FTTP require any other cabs? Or does it use this existing infrastructure?

It's all underground or via poles - no cabs at all. Overview in this video:

It's completely separate from FTTC, except that FTTC cabinets are also fed from fibre aggregation nodes.

So where exactly in Spencers Wood are you ? I thought they had covered most of the EO stuff with the cab in the exchange yard car park.

Theres LOTS of FTTP in and around that way too.
