Can you post single thread results from the Xilo Speedtest.net server? If ok, then nothing wrong with your connection as thats a pretty reliable ookla server. And multi for reassurance?
My broadband basic info/help site - www.robertos.me.uk. Domains, site and mail hosting - Tsohost.
Connection - Three 4G, tbb tests normally 35-45Mpbs down, 65Mbps off-peak, 9-24 up.

Yep multi as well! Personally I find Vodafone London and xilos the most reliable ookla servers.

Another factor is that by showing the median figure our figures are sensitive to variations, and on watching various ookla Gigabit connection tests the speeds seem to ramp up as test goes on and final figure is what is reported, rather than any average. Good for boasting but of little use in seeing if there is a dip in speed.

I suspect this feature will become more and more important as speeds go up, and variability increases.
I don't think most UK consumers would cope with my friends in US cable service. You get 350 Mbps or faster in the middle of the day, but 30 to 50 Mbps in the evenings!

Like I said you're not alone (all results from a wired connection to each ONT port):
Fluidone FTTP 330/30 ONT Port 1

single

multi
and one TBB i've just used
my main question is where would i encounter this single threaded speed in realworld apps? as i've not seen anything under 55MB/s when i download from browser or steam or whatever else.

So your single thread results on the Xilo Speedtest.net server tally with the Vodafone results, both of which are considerably higher than the TBB results. This clearly suggests the tbb single thread results are inaccurate so youve probably got nothing to worry about.

Certainly very odd now the Vodafone Ookla test server has been taken out.

Just proves the results from the TBB single thread tester aren't always correct, for whatever reason.

Networks are getting insanely complicated. Due to the increasing speeds.
