Re: How is FTTP speed regulated

Pretty sure there's no 160/20 tier on Openreach FTTP. If you're getting 140+ Mbps in speedtests then you're definitely on 160/30 (or higher). Have you tried different speedtests such as TBB, Ookla etc? Do all of them give you significantly less than 30 Mbps in upload? Weird if that's the case...

Edit: perhaps try a dfferent router or plug any PC into the ONT (setup a PPPoE connection) to rule out hardware issues?

Yes, Ive tried multiple sites, even BTs own speed test in their MY BT iOS and Android apps.

Everything shows upload of around 20.3 Mbps, and download of around 142 Mbps, strongly suggesting a 160/20 profile. Im mystified if 160/20 isnt an actual Openreach FTTP profile. Given the history of my problems, Im wondering if Openreach are doing some sort of manual fudge to get around a problem.

According to the price list here, Openreach don't sell (or have ever sold?) 160/20 to CPs

https://www.openreach.co.uk/orpg/home/products/prici...

If you haven't already done so, try using a different router or connecting to the ONT directly.

BINGO!! With a PPPoE connection direct to my PC I'm seeing 31.35 Mbps upload speed on speedtest, slightly lower on TBB:

So what now? Is the latest BT Smart Hub 2 not capable of an upload speed higher than 20 Mbps?

Nice smile Maybe save the Home Hub 2 for this year's bonfire?

On a serious note, do a hard reset on the Home Hub and see if this fixes the issue. If it doesn't then ask BT to send you their latest router free of charge (Home Hub 6 i think) or alternatively use a half decent third party router such as the Netgear R7800 or Asus RT-AC86U.

So is this a known limitation of the Smart Hub 2? After all, it is BT's latest hub, and I'm tied into it so I can continue to use the wifi disc. I tried the first hub that BT sent me, which is a BT Hub 6, and that also restricts upload speed to 20 Mbps.

No idea mate. I have a BT Business Hub 6 which easily gives me speeds of 310/50 (I'm on the 330/50 BT FTTP tier) though I don't use it as my main router. I'd be more than happy to lend it to you for testing (I'm not far from you - I'm in Westhill just outside Inversneckie) but pretty sure the Business Hub 6 is locked down to the line its assigned to.

My Super Hub 2 is giving me 30Mbps up on the same package so shouldn't be an inherent limitation of the hub. Can't remember if you have said earlier in the thread but have you done speedtests directly wired to the hub to rule out any possible wireless issues?

Thanks for confirming that its not an inherent problem with the Smart Hub 2. And yes, all speed tests Im doing are from a PC directly connected to the hub with Ethernet.

So a final (I hope) post on this. I'm now getting 160/30, but through a strange sequence of events. Be interested in anyone's thoughts on what has happened this morning.
1. I tested connection on the Smart Hub 2 - still only 20 Mbps upload
2. Tested using an old TP-LINK TD-W9980 - upload speed is 30 Mbps
3. Tested using an old Home Hub 5 Type A - upload speed is 30 Mpbs
4. Tested using an old BT Smart Hub Type A - upload speed is 30 Mbps
5. Reverted back to the new Smart Hub 2, and surprisingly the upload speed is now 30 Mbps

So, any thoughts on this? My own conclusions are that either:
1. During my testing this morning, someone at BT or Openreach did something to fix the problem
OR
2. Somehow using the other hubs/routers caused something to change that fixed the Smart Hub 2 problem.

It's very strange, but at last I have my 160/30 service.

EDIT: Just noticed on DSLCHECKER that my line says "There is an open order on your line which is due to complete by 20-Jan-2020", so that will probably break it all again!!
