Guess, but maybe a QoS/traffic profile setting got stuck and the playing around with different hardware took long enough that when Smart Hub 2 was reconnected it refreshed its QoS settings.

Will probably never know the reason, but that sounds like a reasonable explanation. The alternative, maybe less credible explanation from BT is that "Having spoken to my colleague in the Hub team, it did sound like it was due to the software, so perhaps disconnecting again has triggered an auto-update."
Did you try the suggested hard reset ... the pin in the hole on the back ?
I just wonder if youve got a vaguely faulty unit. They are, on the whole, a fairly robust bit of kit. ( putting aside sniffy comments from the techie end of users on here)
If Im honest, Id have expected download to be a tad higher too.

Yes, I did several "pin in the hole" factory resets. Also a reason to not suspect the hub being faulty is that I could only get 20 Mbps upload on a BT Hub 6 as well. The upload speed has been consistent around the 142-144 mark across all tests on all hubs and on the PPPoE direct PC connection.
