I assume at the OLT end the issues candlerb mentioned are contained at that point and are not cascaded into the OR network ?

Issues won't leave the exchange, but there is the headend and fibre management where all the GPON fibres connect to the OLT

In reply to a post by MrSaffron:
While also synchronising a move to the other OLT to ensure interoperability and as its not one fibre per ONT at the headend, you need to synchronise a lot of ONT changes at the same time.

OR be very confident that interoperability is NOT an issue.

*Or* put the new users on XG-PON/XGS-PON which use different lambdas over the same fibres - ships that pass in the night. You can then swap out ONTs individually.

The details of exactly what's going to be done haven't been published yet (and probably not even decided). I honestly can't see Openreach swapping out every single Huawei FTTC cabinet, let alone every Huawei OLT and ONT. I expect the proposals to be quietly watered down to exclude this stuff - or at least delayed until we find out if Trump gets re-elected or not, as it's his anti-Chinese crusade that's causing all this.

Pretty much that .. I expect this to change again.

On the otherhand what an NOT does is relatively simple and a number of OLT vendors support more than their own One's. It would not be hard for the likes of Nokia to support existing Huawei One's. I would not be surprised if Openreach made that a condition of the tender, and it would be worthwhile Nokia putting the manpower into making it supported.

I always thought there was a standard for basic functionality that most ONT suppliers conformed too, I thought the main area of incompatibility was diagnostics.

Edit: I was referring to the 'ONT Management Control Interface' (OMCI) standards

In reply to a post by dogcat:
One would imagine that Openreach would probably want to be replacing the Huawai headend kit anyway at some point as it can't cope with XGS-PON

Certainly can. Just needs new line cards.

Building better networks, not just faster ones.
