Openreach Fibre First Question

So I live in an area where Openreach are upgrading their network to FTTP.

My question is:

Do Openreach install the cables and ONT to every house when they build the network, or do they run the cable to your home and add the ONT when you order.

The latter.

They build the FTTP network up to a point near your house: either on top of a pole, or in an underground chamber. This will be a "Connectorised Block Terminal" (CBT), like this one:

They come in different sizes depending on the number of properties to be served, and there will be one port for each property.

When you order FTTP service, the installation engineer will run a fibre cable from the CBT to your house, and install the ONT.

So the fibre team are very likely to install the cables to the footway box in your street then spur off from there? I was wondering if it would be further away.

If properties are currently served underground from a footway box, then yes, they will install a CBT in there at the time of building the fibre network. When that's done and live, all the properties served from that footway box will switch to showing FTTP available to order.

Each of the CBTs is connected back to a "splitter", which is also normally in an underground chamber somewhere serving a number of CBTs. The splitter in turn has a fibre cable back to a "fibre aggregation node", also underground.

With only a few special case exceptions, the FTTP network doesn't touch FTTC cabinets at all.

In some cases the draw ropes for ducted underground areas may also be installed ready for when people eventually order. How widespread I cannot say, but it is happening in some cases.

I have a relative who lives in Salisbury, a fibre first city, their property’s existing copper service is via a UG radial DP, then a direct in ground armoured cable coming up in the hallway.

The FTTP has been deployed to CBT’s on newly installed pole. Keeps the cost down I guess.

Does OR still install a CSP? My home is only about 5 meters away from the chamber in the ground, so wasn't sure if they would just pull the cable straight into my home to the ONT. I think they were doing that at one point?

They came and pulled the blue rope the day after I ordered FTTP and they are coming on Tues to install it.

CSP is fairly normal these days.

Makes repairs to damage to fibre indoors or outdoors easier to deal with.

As Mr.S says, the fitting of a CSP is what is *supposed* to happen.

I was installed in Jan this year. In my case OR pulled fibre through the existing ducting (alongside the existing copper) from the chamber to the house. Maybe 20-30m. No CSP, just direct to ONT.

So it can vary.
