Back in the day the consultancy I used to work for paid for my home broadband, mobile, etc. As long as I could provide invoices etc. They were quite generous with expenses, but it was a demanding gig.

I know you don't use your broadband for work but millions out their do and I would 'suspect' that very few companies contribute towards the broadband costs of their employee's and considering a lot of companies now have a hot desking system in the office it has saved them a fair bit as they have been able to downside their offices. I know some may raise the point that the government during Covid gave a small tax rebate of around £60 for working from home but thats not the same thing.

You have not said why you need something so fast for your work, unless I missed it? The place I work wants us to use our phones for their apps and for teams, I refuse outright, I leave my phone in my locker, they even wanted people to start taking photos of their work to make sure it was done, that is only one manager that wants that, if I worked on that department I would say give the equipment and I will. Companies expect us to use our own equipment and use our own money, for them. As i said to one of my managers last week, i go to work, do my work and then go home, get paid at the end of four weeks.
I never used to feel like that, i would stay on and help, but no more.

I certainly would not pay for my broadband for work, any work unless it benefited me. Just the way i am these days.

if i go for a faster broadband it will be for me.

You didn't miss it as I didn't say, I also didn't say I needed broadband for work nor did I say I have a broadband package that was 'so fast' compared to the top end packages available today as relatively mine is a push bike but faster than a snail. wink

Some people (in office jobs, not others) prefer to work from home, when there is a fully paid for, funded office desk for them. At that point the business doesn't feel it should pay for home working facilities as they're already paying for an office.

I can understand that.

My sister-in-law works both at home and office. I don't know if she get any payments for using her own equipment. Saying that her boss is pretty good, when my Dad passed away he did all the legal stuff and was not going to charge us, but we did give him something for the trouble.
I was chatting to one of the Zzoomm people today as I went for a walk to get some air, seems like they are doing pretty good up here and a fair few people are taking up the service. i did say to him that Zzoomm need to supply a better router, and he told me it was down to cost that they decided to change router and to one router not two, which i guessed that anyway.
We had a good chat for 5 minutes, he was showing me the fibre, still amazed at how much data can pass though that.

WAN fibre is impressive, but wait until you see some of the direct connect (DAC) cables in data centres, or the insanely fast Storage Array fibres. smile

Just amazing really that it is all done by light, saying that it still amazes me that they can get so much data going down copper cables that must be over 60 years old smile
The box by my front door where the cables are connected to come inside is a jungle, a right mess, and I am shocked it even works. It is the original box where the phone used to connected before we had the master sockets, so now the master socket connects to it.
but it must be ok as Out of reach had a look at it when I had some problems.

But yes, fibre is amazing technology.

Now the Covid rebates are over, if you are permanently home-based and your employer doesn't contribute anything towards your broadband cost etc., you can still claim a tax rebate against your excess costs through the normal channels.

I still come out way ahead working from home - my monthly broadband cost is equivalent to three days of train tickets and the majority of people are getting just as much done as they ever did in the office. It makes the way we used to do things look weird in comparison.
