Trooli Consumer Install

Hi guys,

I see that Trooli have a number of boxes to get their service up and running.

External splice box which then has a small white fibre to another box internally, which then goes to a Adtran XPGSPON, which then goes into their router.

Question is, is the Adtran that has the RJ45 outlet to their router on acting as the 'modem'?

Ill be binning off their router and was going to install my Draytek130 modem, but if the Adtran is serving the same purpose, as a modem i wont bother and just go from that straight into my Edgerouter.

Yes, it's analogous to that. Converts the optical signal to electrical for connection to the router.

The Draytek Vigor 130 modem is for VDSL only (i.e. copper connection for FTTC), so you can forget that with any fibre-based service.

The Adtran ONT indeed acts in place of the "modem", and it will have an RJ45 connection to the router's WAN port.

In principle, you can connect your own router here. Whether Trooli allow you to do this under their T&Cs, and whether they provide you with the technical information necessary to make such a connection, is another matter.

Yes i was aware of the process to break out the details but just wasn't sure about the modem side of things, which as it turns out the Draytek isn't any good anyway!

The Adtran unit will at best only be providing a single IP address (it might expectbthe router to initiate PPPoE).. It won't be providing a firewall, NAT or WiFI, unless you are just wanting to connect a single computer you will need the router

edit looking at the link to the other thread, it looks like trying to use your own router will be tricky and is discouraged by Trooli, I expect even if you get a third party router to work it may cause support issues in future

I do have my network already up and running so don't need the supplied router, and if there is any need for support, i can swap it back in.

As an alternative, if i were to use their existing router, does anyone know if there is an option to switch off all the wifi on it and just leave it in place as the main router?

I already have an AP installed in the house, and a spare switch that i could remove the edgerouter and use that in place of it.

The Adtran ONT is simply a layer 2 device. It provides an outbound Ethernet interface. It doesn’t get involved in IP addressing, or PPPoE termination - that is the function of the client device connected to the Ethernet port - either a router or client PC.

Well, i have just dug into the admin menu on the supplied router and found that the wifi can be turned off so once he is done, i'll do that for now and keep their router in place to get me back up and running and sort out the ER when i get time.
