EE 1.6Gbps in practice

[link to this post]

Hi all,

I have a 8-port 10Gbps switch and my PC has a 5Gbps Sabrent ethernet edapter via USB-C.

From what I can see from pictures on the internet, the EE Smart Hub only has one 2.5Gbps socket.

So, does this mean that I'd have to place the 10Gbps switch between the ONT (once upgraded) and Smart Hub or would I have to bite the bullet and buy a router with more than one multi-gig socket in order for the PC to receive all 1.6Gbps?

Many thanks.

Worth checking what your switch will negotiate. I believe that many 10Gbps switches will only do 10G and 1G and not 2.5G so this may stuff up your plans a little...

I'm fairly sure the EE Hub only has a 2.5Gbps WAN, all the LAN ports are 1Gbps. So you'd need to replace the router if you wanted a single wired device to get more than 1Gbps.

Exactly this, I am on the EE Busiest Home Bundle and the supplied is less than awful for this package.
Bought myself a TP-Link BE19000 and never looked back since.

Thanks.

Was it straightforward to set up or did the router have to configured with usernames and passwords to connect to EE?

Currently using my own router with BT and it took a while to get them to understand what I was doing.

Placing a switch between the ONT and the router's WAN port is pointless (unless you want to sniff the PPPoE traffic).

The router's WAN port connects to the ONT.

If when you receive it the EE Smart Hub really has only 1 x 2.5G port for the WAN, and no 2.5G port for LAN, then I suggest you cancel your order and wait until April when other ISPs will be providing 1.6G, or buy your own router.

Or else, take a 1G connection from the SmartHub into your switch for now, until they later upgrade to decent hardware. It *might* be possible to bond two 1G links together, but I doubt the EE smart hub is that sophisticated.

Of course, you *can* still use that 1.6G. You just have to think that 600M is reserved for wifi users, and 1G for your LAN users. Or you can plug some devices which have 1G links directly into the the smart hub instead of into the switch.

I have just been starting to refresh my infrastructure ready for this, upgraded my core switch to one with 12 mGig ports and 4 x 10G SFPs.

I currently have my 1G ONT into one the mGig ports ready for its swap to the 2.5G variant, that is then in its own VLAN which gets passed over to my ESXI server (OPNSense is virtualised)

Also changed the APs out for U6 Enterprises - nearly 2G over wireless now!

Think I am ready to go... Just hoping other ISPS start selling it from 1st April as EE are about as expensive as it gets.
