Installing FTTP direct to an outbuilding ?

I am looking to get FTTP which is now available here to go direct to a summer house (20m from house) in the garden, which has its own BT phone line and master socket. The FTTP company won't be BT though.

Do companies normally charge extra for such a service ? As I presume they have to install a line in the garden somewhere that comes out from the outside of the house as that is where the telegraph pole wire connects to. Although given it is FTTP maybe the line isn't connected yet, as there is some kind of black box recently installed on the pole so is a whole new line taken from that box ? I still want a landline.

I suggest that you as the FTTP company. Just tell them where you want the service. I would want broadband in the house as well!

If the service is underground then it is easier to go under a lawn than tarmac or concrete for a drive.

A family member had a standard phone line to the house and a seperate phone line to the barn whch was an office and well away from the house. That had FTTC originally and now FTTP to the barn.

You will just need to be very specific with the provider when ordering.

Yup, me too. Obviously, I don't know OP's situation, but I'd be definitely wanting some structure cabling between the summer house and the main house so a single FTTP service could service both with ease!

I presume the garden building is designated as an office and for accounting purposes a dedicated connection is a lot easier to deal with.

I think these days the "business phone line" thing has gone by the wayside. I can remember my dad having one back in the day, but most business probably expect that people working at home will use some sort of shared connection. My employer just pays a flat, monthly allowance for mine and I think this will be the norm these days.

is there a desperate need to have the ont in the summer house? Also can you run a cat6 cable from the house to the summer house instead. That way if the cable breaks its not a complete loss of service .

If you're running between buildings, fibre is advised to eliminate grounding issues or lightening.

This, a hundred times over.

You can buy ready-made, pre-terminated single-mode fibre cables, and you just need a switch at each end with an SFP port, and a couple of 1000baseLX SFP modules.

(That's for 1G. For 10G you need SFP+ ports and 10GbaseLR SFP+ modules)

All those modules require 2 fibre strands. You can get modules that use a single strand, but they're more expensive. In any case if you're installing a fibre cable you might as well get one with at least 4 strands. Oh, and use outdoor rated cable.

Don't do media converters. A switch will be more reliable, and if it's a managed switch and your SFP modules support DOM (which most do), then you'll be able to check the light levels.

I’m in agreement if it’s coming off a separate power supply… However you’ll always have copper, that being your power supply.
