Until lighting hits ... having had it come in through both phone line drop wire and underground power it is not nice. My old switch has a hole burnt through the metal case!

Don't do media converters. A switch will be more reliable, and if it's a managed switch and your SFP modules support DOM (which most do), then you'll be able to check the light levels.


I use the Ubiquiti converter https://uk.store.ui.com/uk/en/pro/category/accessori... with suitable SFP modules.

ouch but fair point. The point was more trying to get the OP to shift the cabling from the FTTP supplier to himself so that he can upgrade cabling etc without having a fixed path.
