Orange offer considerations

[link to this post]

Currently I've got Pipex. However I've been chased by Orange for a few weeks with their free broadband offer as I have an Orange mobile. Unfortunately their sales people are so dumb to answer some simple questions (or I am so stupid to ask them). Anyway I hope maybe people who already have Orange broadband will be so kind to post some of their comments. So these are the questions:

1. Does anyone know Orange's fair use policy for unlimited broadband as I'd rather pay

1 - ~50gb/month down + up as I understand

2 - Not that I've noticed, bit torrent seems to be fine

3 - It does, it has 2 Ethernet ports, one is marked 'Ethernet LAN' (which the PC is currently plugged into) and the other 'Ethernet TV', I presume they both work though.....

4 - Not sure on this, I don't use it

5 - Cordless phone maybe? Have the base unit by the livebox and a extra handset upstairs - assuming they don't interfere with each other. I have a cordless base unit fairly close to the livebox and they both work fine

hope this has been of some help. If not the Orange help page does have some decent info in and can actually be quite handy for some problems, but it can also be a bit of a pain to navigate

thanks a lot. Do you use their phone service? I am on Talk Talk and pay 20 quid for unlimited calls. As I understand I can stay with Talk Talk 'cos I need a BT line anyway.

Q3. There are 2 ethernet ports, so you can attach 2 hard-wired PCs.
If you need more, it should be possible to connect your old router to the Livebox and use the old router as an ethernet switch You need to disable the old router's DHCP service, disable its wireless service (or set it to use a different wireless channel), and maybe change some other settings.

Q5. The catch with the Livebox phone system is that your incoming number will be 0845... This will make you very unpopular if you don't have an alternative BT phone for incoming calls.

I heard that the quality of Orange's VoIP is not very good. Also someone mentioned that Orange gives 0845 number, which is not the number to die for...

ive not had any problems with quality really... certainly nothing worse than a mobile.

as far the 0845 number, does it matter? its for incoming calls only. you'll still have your bt number should you so desire

I signed up a week or so ago, I was offered the choice of 0845 or a range of local numbers (London, Birmingham etc). I think it may have also said you can change it later. However, I'm still waiting for my Livebox, so don't know my number yet (I picked an 01/02 rather than 0845 though).

I never got asked - I just got given a number that is a standard number for my exchange so it's 0161 XXXX XXXX.

Same here.

I presume it is what Orange have access to.
Unlike BT they probably dont have access to local codes for the whole UK so if you dont live in an area where they have that dialling code they offer the generic 0845

Originally on <n>ildram Broadband Pro (2mb)

Work ADSL - Now resold from Entranet
Home - Orange
