New EE broadband order and connection is slow

[link to this post]

Hi all,

I decided to join this forum as I was wanting to ask some questions on why my connection would be slow. I've only just had my EE broadband activated on Wednesday evening and the speed hasn't been what EE say it could be. I know my line is ADSL2+ so I should be getting 11mbps+ right?

Here are my stats from my Bright Box. Do EE do the 10 day speed thing like Sky do? I remember my speed went up from 2mbps up to 15mbps on Sky within a few days, but my speed has stayed around 6mbps on EE since Wednesday.

Yes, you should be getting well over 11 Meg with that Target NM looking like 3 dB. But give it 10 days as Orange/BTw seems to operate a funny learning period.

Post rest of router stats so we can see error counts.

You've re-synced since last set as speed has changed. Would you post "Time Connected:" from top Status page with any future stats?

These are high if you have just rebooted (they are only zeroised on reboot).

Could point to noisy line. Try plugging into hidden test socket; swap filters; remove ring wire.

Stats are good. You have long line. What exchange you on?

Do BT Quiet Line Test (17070 Opt 2) with router disconned. Any noise report as voice fault.

Test with Hidden Test Socket

DLM noticed your line unstable on Fast Path and switched to Interleaved, as Yarwell predicted, giving more, FEC, error checking and correction. Its main effect on you will be slower, double, ping times.

However, I can't see why you are only getting 6 Meg when you could be getting 11, unless EE has put you on some sort of banded profile; Up sync certainly is as it should be 888K.

Did you carry out my previous suggestions. particularly test socket?

EDIT: What speed did EE promise you? What speed does it say in your Member's Centre under "change your package"?

I have noticed my ping has gone up from 20ms to 30ms.

Yes I did try the test socket and my main socket only has 2 wires in there anyway. Blue and white, and a dark blue. No difference in test socket.

The "Orange" member's centre (I'm not even on Orange!) says:

speed information

The speed estimate at registration or the speed we have measured on your line is 2.0Mb.

2mb is definitely wrong. When I ordered and they did a line check, they said I will definitely get between 11 meg and 18 meg!

Noise Margin
up 29.0 dB
down 6.4 dB

there is likely something in the house plugged into the phone line or there is an fault somewhere (noise down 6.4 dB on Attenuation 37dB line but only getting 4-6mb), you should be getting at least 10-15mb down and up to 800-950kb at least on the upload

all your speeds seem to be half what they should be

there are no other phone sockets in the house, is there any static or background noise when you pick the phone up (dial 0 or call some one) if there is any noise then there is an line fault somewhere , if not mite be time to call EE and have fun

Your noisy line has triggered the exchange Multi-service access Node (MSAN) to switch from fast path to interleaved path, this is to stabilise your connection, it is normal with line faults. wink

There are other sockets in the house, but all have been checked.

I've made several calls and they're all crystal clear, no static, no noise.

I may have to call EE then...

but do they work when you take the extension plate off the master socket all your internal lines should stop working apart from the test socket

if they still work even with the extension plate off, then its more likely you have an internal line fault (there is not always noise not that we can hear)

Errors are high!

Try running from test socket. It might not immediately make it faster but it might cut down on errors so that eventually DLM might see your line as more stable.

No, the objective is to eliminate or otherwise your house wiring from the equation.

The Q is where are these high error rates arising?

internal wireing tends to be most users problems with speed (or an skybox with no filter like today)

the higher the speed the Lower the Noise margin will be, you see its at 7.2mb but Noise margin is close to 0 now (it not work at zero it can be iffy below 3 noise margin but if your line is stable you can squeeze bit more speed out the lower the noise margin you can get it)

other note as well your upload speed is to slow for an ADSL2 connection it looks like your on an 8mb profile, as you have got 443kbs or 448kbs upload speed it should be more around 700-900kbs

and your error rate is high as well

you still likely got some sort of fault that is making the noise margin be so low on that line, plug it into the test socket and make sure none of the other sockets are working (all the extension lines should be connected the the Plate or via a phone cable plugin)
post your speed results from your modem once you have done that (with Noise margin stuff and attenuation) like you did on your first post

Orange sometimes starts Up speed @ 444K even on ADSL2+ before increasing it to 888K on Interleaved or well over 1 Meg for Fast Path.

Hi all,

I've spoken to EE and they advised me to plug in to the test socket which I have done and they ran some line tests. Apparently they can't see anything wrong so have booked a BT engineer to come out. Still underperforming!

Up sync should be 888K, but nowt BT OR eng can do about that; only Orange can reduce NM.
Down sync should be well over 11 Meg.

Lots of errors: ES too high and 6 LoS in 41 mins.

Should I give EE another call then? I never know what to say!

You got eng coming? Wait for him. Sometimes, if he can fix downstream, upstream might follow in time.

With lots of spare margin on the upstream it is possible that Orange has banded the line. On WBC providers have lots of options and Orange appears to try and favour stability over actual sync speed

Engineer came today and sorted out the internal wiring of my flat. Getting a much better speed now and the line has gone back to FAST PATH. Apparently the speed will improve more?

Down sync & NM spot on!

Up sync & NM look capped, but I hope now it has reverted to Fast Path that this will free itself in time.

Not happy at high ES + 1 LoS.

That is the Q!

It could your line, the filter, the router ... Are you running from test socket? Worth swapping any you can and see if it reduces errors. Don't forget to hard reboot router after any change so error counts are zeroised and we can assess their rates of change.

I don't think it would be the line, especially when the engineer spent over an hour doing line tests!

I can try another filter?

I am plugged in to the test socket, yes. I have been for the past 3-4 days now.

I'll post some more stats tomorrow when I change the filter.

Allow me to introduce you to another EE user on a similar connection who is also suffering from high error rates: http://forums.thinkbroadband.com/general/f/4226118-d...
