Trying to leave orange

[link to this post]

Transferred from my previous broadband provider to orange unlimited, I know those with the orange service that have been perfectly happy, but it seems I've been unlucky/am in the wrong area.

To cut a long story short:
Ever since starting with orange I've experienced lag, disconnections, freezes etc. etc.. and looking around I don't hold out much hope for this going away all of a sudden and want to get things sorted asap. I had none of these probs with my previous provider (bulldog).

I've tried tech support, got shifted from person to person, generally someone promising: "Thank you for phoning technical support, my name is ***, I will DEFINITELY be able to help you solve your problem"....what a joke!

I now want to leave orange, only problem, I've been with them less than a month (24th april), but only the broadband starter package lets people cancel within the first 30days.

Checking my account it appears that it is possible to transfer from unlimited to their starter package.

THE QUESTION:
If I were to transfer from my unlimited to the starter package would I then be able to make use of the 30day cancellation window and leave?

Ok, unfortunately just found my answer:

"You can't take advantage of the 30 day trial if you're joining under another special offer or have been an Orange Broadband customer within the last six months" from the orange site...

....guess I'll just have to persist on the line that they're not providing an appropriate service, any other tips would greatly help me out.

I used the broadband checker even phoned to double check it before signing up, they did actually say I'd definitely get a 5mb connection at the outset, but the max I can get is 2mb (their checker has since changed as well, surprise surprise, sneaky scoundrels!). Also without a voice recording I guess I have no proof so not the best line to follow.

Just to further update my situation, I've just come out of one heck of an ordeal.

MESSAGE FOR THE DAY:
Anyone considering orange, try it, but only sign up to Orange Starter at first. That way if you're not happy in the first month you can quit. If all goes ok for you, excellent.

THE ORDEAL BEGINS:
I had already had one line check run by orange and it didn't find the cause of the problem. I was bascially told my connection was fine, I suggested they could come and see for themselves, surprise surprise no uptake on that offer!

I was transferred to customer care being informed that they would be able to cancel my service for me without fee....hoorah, I got someone who could converse freely in the English language...only problem, whilst he agreed that things were going nowhere with orange he couldn't do anything without specific authorization. He advised I call tech support and it shouldn't be too much of a problem getting this authorization.

Called tech support: sorry we can't provide that authorization without at least 3 line checks, but we'll run another for you if you like. I asked for a specific guarantee that they would indeed give me authorization for a waived cancellation fee after 3 tests:
"Yes, I will write a note saying that now" was the reply and they told me the test would be carried out right away...jolly good.

Next day: called only to be told no request was made for a line test. Rather unhappy I asked to speak to a supervisor. After much negotiation we finally agreed that he would give the authorization to me. I was subsequently transferred back to customer care.

BUT....customer care said no authorization was issued for the cancellation fee to be waived (....WHAT?!!!)....I was transferred BACK to the tech support guys. Again much negotiation, eventually got through to another supervisor who said authorization had indeed been given, but he assured me he'd write another report and transfer me back to customer care..

SECOND time round (1 hour 40minutes after first calling!) I was told again no authorization had been granted. Now was about the time steam was coming from my ears... In a calm, steady voice I informed them I'd already been through this. I was asked to hold, half an hour later I got another supervisor who finally agreed to give me a mac code and assure me I could get a full refund on the
