Connection Speed Issues (have line data)

[link to this post]

Hi guys, I've had broadband for years and recently moved into a new flat so decided to go with Orange. I'm not that bothered about how fast it goes as long as it is stable and above 5-6mb/s which I was getting at my last place on a ADSL Max product.

My Orange details are as follows:

ADSL Line
Status: Cable connected
Line mode: G.992.5 (ADSL2+)
Maximum line rate: 1021 kbps (downstream) / 604 kbps (upstream)
Noise margin: 31 dB (downstream) / 2649 dB (upstream)
Line attenuation: 21 dB (downstream) / 10 dB (upstream)
Output power: 19 dBm (downstream) / 12 dBm (upstream)

I can't find how to calculate the theoretical download maximum speed so can anyone help by letting me know what is possible on this line?

I might be a bit paranoid but for the first week or so of usage the connection was hitting 10-11mb/s and I was incredibly happy and impressed with the service, however this week it's taken a dive right down to 1mb/s (bottoming out at 0.6mb/s last night!!).

Thanks to anyone who is able to help smile

That's not good! With your attenuation of 21 dB you could get 19 Meg. Presume you on LLU as you once got 11 Meg.

The D/S NM is too high and the U/S NM is bugged. Could be due to noise on your house wiring. Have you changed filters, plugged into master socket behind faceplate, removed ring wire and connected by Ethernet?

I have one PC connected through Ethernet directly and that is the main PC that the Ornage box is sat ontop of.

I've swapped the phone lead for a much shorter one and did a new speed test, here is my result:

After resetting the box I took fresh stats again as follows:

ADSL Line
Status: Cable connected
Line mode: G.992.5 (ADSL2+)
Maximum line rate: 1021 kbps (downstream) / 604 kbps (upstream)
Noise margin: 31 dB (downstream) / 2649 dB (upstream)
Line attenuation: 21 dB (downstream) / 10 dB (upstream)
Output power: 19 dBm (downstream) / 12 dBm (upstream)

I'm thinking that with the line rate set to 1021kbps would that mean that the connection has been capped to this speed?

I had a lot of TV shows to catch up with after a month without internet so that might have pushed me over any hidden download limitation clauses...

Here are my results for plugging directly into the port behind the faceplace of the BT master socket:

I just changed back to my old Netgear router and checked the line stats for that - it came back with these, if that is any help:

ADSL Link Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 1020 kbps 604 kbps
Line Attenuation 20.0 db 9.5 db
Noise Margin 36.1 db 28.4 db

Thanks again laugh

It does look like you are being capped. Hate to suggest it, but 'phone Orange and ask them.
