Speed

I have been with Orange for some time, Wanadoo days, and generally been happy with reliability and speed. I have normally been getting around 2.6 to 2.9 meg (rural exchange).
Over the last 2-3 weeks I now get about 1.6 to 1.9 meg.

When I look at changing to other ISP's I normally get told my line should support 1.5 meg.

The following are the stats (Do not know what they mean) from my router:

Noise 15.3 db
Attenuation 52 db
Attainable download rate 2912
Rate down 2688
Rate up 448
Connection mode G.DMT
Interleaving is on

Using speedtester currently gives

1949 down amd 378 up

Can anyone help me with what may have happened to the speed I was getting.

You should sync somewhere in excess of 4M with 52dB attenuation and 6dB SNRM. On IPStream that should give a throughput of around 3.5M; more on ADSL2+.

Thank you also, I have checked with the Kitz web site regarding attenuation and their calculator indicates Dsl Max at 4284 and an IP Profile of 3500.


I have been doing some trials/research on this and trying to come to terms with all the technical stuff is not easy.

I did a speed check with btspeedtester and that gave the following;

Max Achievable Speed 2000
Dowload achieved during test 1635
DSL connection rate 3008 Down 448 Up
IP profile 1750

As my router is on an extension from the main socket I then moved the router and connected it directly to the main socket. I have one of the BT i plates connected.

I then ran the btspeed tester again

Max Achievable Speed 7150
Dowload achieved during test 2348
DSL connection rate 3552 Down 448 Up
IP profile 2500

Not quite the speed I was getting but not far off, though there is a considerable change in the so called Max. Achievable Speed. Conclusion, there is a problem with the internal wiring.

I then tried one more speed test on the extension and got 2425. I am now confused.

Nest day I ran speedtest on extension and back to 1949. What is going on. So back to main socket and now that is also only giving me a speed in the 1900's.

Can anyone make any sense out of what is going on?

Your internal wiring, extension cables etc are suspect. IMO, the iPlate is a waste of time.
Re-cable using CW1308 cable which is sensibly routed and has the bell wire disconnected throughout. Do not use telephone extension cables as the majority of these are useless.

Thanks for interest.
I fitted the iPlate about 9 months ago as I was given it for free but it made no difference to my speed.

You will see from my previous post that I also thought the wiring was the problem but as I said I get the same speed whether I use the extension cables I have or plug the router directly to my main BT socket with no telephones/cables attached.

Look at the "Maximum achievable speed" reports of each test. Because you are connected via BTw, their profiling will take a while to catch up with your achievable sync rate. Therefore, the reported throughput "isn't accurate".

Check your router stats from your usual setup and then check them again whilst connected directly to the hidden test socket of the NTE5. Post the two sets of figures here.

I have done as you asked and the following are the results.

Rate 3520 Down 448 Up

Speedtest 1949

Attenuation 51.0 db

Yes they are the right way round.

Did you use only a known good short RJ11 cable and a known good filter to connect to the hidden test socket of the NTE5?

The result from the BT Tester suggests that your attenuation figures are wrong and I can't ever remember seeing it error in this way before. It is probably an error but equally, it might be a damaged RJ11 cable (Or extension if used). It's worth testing out fully because it would be a shame to accept an inferior service because of a simple cure.

If the tester was wrong and your stats are true, the eventual resetting of the target SNRM to 6dB would probably get you the expected sync of around 4-4.5M.

I actually used the existing filter and cable and then a new filter and cable but the results were the same.

This morning my speed is back to what I was getting some 3-4 weeks ago i.e. 2.95

Very strange.

Could you explain your comment "the eventual resetting of the target SNRM to 6dB". I have looked at my router stats this morning and the noise is still 15.3.

How does the SNRM reset?
