I am thinking of purchasing a PS3 slim and have a couple of questions:
Backward Compatability - I understand from Sony literature that the PS3 Slim cannot play PS2 games - As I have never owned a PS2 and thus do not have a stock of games, is this really a problem? Can I assume that any PS2 game out there would have a PS3 version?
External Hard Drive - I was thinking of going for the 250GB version but, if I can connect an external USB hard drive (or even map to a network drive) then I could really o for the smaller sizes. So, Can I connect an external USB hard drive to the PS3 slim or map to other network drives?
Are there any other downsides to the Slim version that I may not be aware of? I am aware you cannot install a different OS on it but that does not bother me in the least.
Any help much appreciated.

I upgraded my Playstation 3 to a Playstaion slim on release, only difference for me is that they have done away with the multi media card reader, there are only 2 usb ports and not the 4 like the old one.
On the plus side its less power hungry ,has a updated cell processer and graphics chip and i have a 120 gig harddrive which like you say can now be purchased with 250 gig.
Its a sexy bit of kit and i much prefer it to the older model, but saying that it does exactly the same as the previous version.
As for playstation 2 games well thats something i dont care for anyway,my personal point and reason being why buy a next so called generation playstation 3 console to play last generation games.
Apart from ico, shadow of colossus and the god of war titles i see very little point
Also playstation 2 games are not all available as playstation 3 games, there are games coming to the play3 that first appeared on the older play 2 but these are new titles.
As for eternal harddrive device then its something i dont use so i would not know the answer. If you got a 250 gig version then i dont see much of a reason to be honest.

Backwards compatibility hasn't been around for ages in PS3's, if you TRULY wanted it you would have to hunt out an old style 60GB which specifically states its backwards compatible. Be prepared to pay a high premium for one though.

There has been a lot of talk about Sony putting most of the popular PS games on PSN in the official PS3 forums, if this is true and the games are priced fairly it will be great.

Thanks very much for the comprehensive reply.
PS3 slim it is.
One final question.
The main use it will have is for feeding media to my Plasma.
Does the media software allow you to alter the aspect ratio?

I have an old 60GB fitted with a 320GB HD

Two games I really enjoyed were TrackMania Sunrise and Supreme Snowboarding boith on the PC.
No idea whether they ever made it to the console.
Would also be great to get some old Atari games too but I doubt they have been ported.

Not sure what you mean by media software but you can set it to display 720p, 1080i and 1080p if you connect it via HDMI. Mine is on a 50" Plasma and never had a problem with it.

As far as PS3 games are concerned, some argue that the Xbox 360 slim has the edge due to the late release of the PS3, although this is only temporary. PS3 will become the games console of choice for the "serious" gamer
playstation 3 slim
|
|
|
|
Actually if you want a platform for the "serious" gamer, you don't touch any console, you gear up with a good PC.
PSN's "saving grace" over xbox live is that its sub free and you don't get a free headset to open the doors to potential mouthy people. Other than that PSN is just as filled as xbl and receives inferior versions of games compared to the 360 - Case in point, black ops, fallout new vegas, etc all the big named games head for the 360 in a much better state than the PS3 ever gets them. If its multiplatform the 360 always wins out over the PS3. If you are a "serious" gamer you won't sacrifice the performance or quality.

3 years ago Falcon your points of view would have been extremly valid but developers have all but ditched the pc in favour of consoles and its the reason i switched to a 360 and Playstation 3.
Your correct in saying that the 360 gets the better versions and the playstation 3 suffers in that respect apart from Exclusive games like Killzone ,Uncharted.Little Big Planet that show that the Playstation has very much Great Power but put in the hands of laxy development companys such as Treyarch the the power is unused.
Considering the specs of the Playstation 3 are much superior to the xbox 360 then this is not good enough.
Black ops as you pointed out was a prime example and after switching from the much flawed Playstation 3 version it was like playing a different game and to some degree i enjoy it very much...............Still for me MW1 and 2 rule.
There was a time when i bought nothing but games for my PC and upgraded it nearly every couple of months just to play them, now there is very little of interest that hits the pc before the consoles with Crysis been the only exception with about 2 % of the pc gamers even able to play it in all its glory given the hardware requirments.
I would switch back to pc gaming tomorrow if the developers did the same thing but consoles like it or not are were the money is at and the pc market regrettably is in decline regarding gaming.
5 years ago everything went to pc first and was ported over many months later, sadly there is very little in the way of games for the pc that even make it considering going back.
World of Warcraft is the most popular online game that according to many is highly addictive, but unlike 5 years ago there is not that much as a gamer to carry on supporting pc games when developers are turning there attention to consoles much much more.
To Be honest Falcon i had more fun with games especially COD United Offensive than i have ever had on consoles but those days seem to have long gone.

No point having hardware thats vastly superior if:
1. It's to expensive to develop to utilise it all
2. It's too hard to develop to utilise it all
I have a ps3, they could be cheaper if they didn't have better hardware just for the sake of it.
Bought Black Ops for the PS3, wish I had got it for 360. Don't know why I went for the ps3 version, a moment of madness maybe.
Signature.

I was lucky that for i bought both versions of Black Ops because of different friends had both Playstation and Xbox 360.
Traded the Playstation version as my Girlfriend deceided to get that Kinect after trying it in a shop in a centre.
I suggest you trade your BO version Peeps for the Much better xbox 360 version, you will only be paying around a tenner once traded if you pick up a second hand copy of black ops on xbox

Really? I'm sure valve and steam would disagree.
It isn't just treyarch who are to blame for PS3 ports being inferior to the their 360 and PC counterparts. If anyone its sonys for making the code base and hardware so complex and bloated. Sure you get exclusive games which show the platform at its best but is that enough? I say no. To date i can't think of a single game which would want me to buy a ps3, hence why i've never walked out and bought one. Just when it looks there might be theres something else which happens or comes to light and that turns me off from it.
The specs in the PS3 aren't that great, its CPU is probably its only stand point, its memory is gimpy and its gpu is subpar. Its not that great of a console despite what sony market it as.
Despite what many think the PC is far from declining, for all the main big titles its full of active players, steam is pretty much the main point of action these days, sure it might not pull in the full hoards of mouthy people i'd say thats for the better.
|
|
|
|
What i mean Falcon is the fact that many known pc developers have openly admited there defection to consoles because there is far more in the way of revenue to be gained from development of consoles opposed to the small percentage of pc players there now is.
|
|
|
|
Well considering you can churn out a game in pretty much any state, charge £40 for it and at least a 100k people will buy it + £8-12 a pop for DLC, then its obvious thats where the money lies, theres no refuting that. Even wii games can fetch up to £35 which is out right ridiculous.
Developers themselves have said PC gaming is ahead of consoles by at least a generation and thats not just on a hardware level, its also been said PC gamers are far more smarter over what they want and expect in the game i.e the quick cash churn won't work, etc.
TBH as a consumer i can't see how the former is good for other consumers, its good for devs yes, but as a buyer? no, i don't think thats anything to be proud of, especially when nothing changes from title to title, just look at CoD (again).
|
|
|
I would be interested to know whether the PC market has diminished substantially (i.e. the number of people buying PC games) or whether the proliferation of console gaming just means it occupies a smaller percentage of the overall pie. Percentages are good for justifying why a focus on consoles more but doesn't necessarily give the full picture.
I remember reading something from Infinity Ward when MW2 was released saying that the PC market only accounted for 15% of sales. But from over 20 mil sales it is still a lot of people!

Best bit about PC gaming is you're not playing with 13 year old idiots quite as much. Every little fecker out there has a 360 or ps3

Biggest problem with consoles and i doubt it will ever change, hardly ever use the microphone to speak as i have it turned off.
Some of the stuff you here when in gaming lobbies is unbelievable and on many occasions i have turned on my microphone just to rant at idiots on there playing loud music or think that for some reason we all want to hear someone constantly whistling or making stupid noises.

if PS3 is better than xbox then which model should i go for...?
playstation 3 slim

That's a personal opinion as to which is best regarding the Playstation 3 or Xbox 360.
Both have slim versions and both have different size hard drives and both have different games exclusive to there consoles.
As to which is best then that's something only you can decide as they are both sound consoles in there own right.
Biggest single factor to consider and in the 360 favour in Multi platform releases is they all tend to be better on the 360 with 90% of playstation 3 games been the inferior product graphically and with frame rate issues.
In the Playstation 3 favour they have some fantastic exclusive games out this 2011 and far more exclusive than 360 has to offer, when a game is made for the PlayStation 3 they always looks very nice and don't get multi format issues.
This year we have Little Big Planet 2 in a few weeks ,followed by Killzone 3 in Feb that is stunning, then later in the year we have the new Uncharted 3 and infamous 2 followed by Team Ico New game The last Guardian who are the makers of Ico and Shadow of Colossus.
You want the best that gaming has to offer and you have plenty of cash then you get both consoles,if its only 1 then you have to decide based on what you think and what you like to play.

TBH I find the simplest 3 questions to ask are:
Do you want the best out of the online out of the console?
Do you want the best out of the multiplatform games?
Do you need a bluray player?
If the answer to the first two is yes and the last one no then get a 360. If you don't care about the first two but do about the last one then get a PS3.
Obviously as t2d the exclusives are something else to look at, IMO the only title out of the ones which is worth considering is the last guardian but due to the lack of details i don't think that will appear soon however thats just me, i haven't seen enough ps3 exclusives to persuade me to buy one, from what i've played at friends they're rather generic/done better else where with the exception of one or two.
I'd use http://www.hotukdeals.com/ to track console prices

The last Guardian believe it or not is down for release this March.
http://www.shopto.net/PS3/NEW%20RELEASES/PS3TH15-The...
There are a few gaming sites that have it listed as above, last time i heard it would be more like end of the year so this news may not be correct.
There are many Exclusives this year with the Playstation 3 with the most, depends on what you like Falcon as there are many i have not mentioned that will sell like hot cakes.............
Xbox 360 Has Mass effect 3 sometime this year and the game i am looking forward to is multi platform..................BULLETSTORM.........This Feb along with Killzone 3 playstation 3 exclusive.............Have you ever played Killzone Falcon as i am curious since you dont have a playstation 3 but may have played such games at friends.

PS3 = mans console/media center
360 = little boys games machine
But and its a BIG BUT...........Games that are multi platform all look better and run better on a 360............Black oops ! been a prime example of lack lustre development and Activision paid of by Microsoft [So it seems] Allegedly
|
|
|
Well, theres no doubt microsoft paid to get the dlc ahead but paying to sabotage the other version? I think thats a bit of stretch tbh. Even if it was true it doesn't explain other titles from other devs
PS3 doesn't deserve anything to do with men, true men buy PC parts, build them and then sit upon their throne basking in crysis on ultra high . Especially if you are looking for proper teamwork PC is where you need to be, BFBC2 vietnam challenge proved that, less hours and 69mil, no DICE charity needed ;D, PS3 didnt even get half way and had more hours than the 360.
TBH its funny you mention PS3 as a media machine because other than bluray its not that good, the 360 can actually deal with MKV unlike the PS3 that requires it transcoding .
|
|
|
Well I wouldn't buy a 360

|
|
true men buy PC parts, build them and then sit upon their throne basking in crysis on ultra high
That's what I called a true man before I became a grown up with a family.
Seriously though, when the family and career take over there is very little time to play games for 4 hours at a time let alone build the hardware to run them!
If you have the time you buy a PC and become a true man ???!?!
If you haven't, you get a console and do what the missus says and utilise the pick up and play option that it is designed for.
