My new toy ....

[link to this post]

After 13 months of release I decided it was time to put some fun into gaming so I just bought a Nintendo Wii U.

I know what people our thinking.....Have I gone mad or something having slated the system for the last 13 months saying it had me not even slightly interested.

Reason for those comments were based on the fact that I didn't really think it was much of a step up from the 360 and Playstation 3 and it also released with some really poor uninteresting games.

But now a year later we have a couple of my Nintendo favourites from the past system, firstly we have the beautiful looking strategy game Pikmin 3 and the game that made Nintendo what they are today ...Mario 3D that has had some of the most amazing reviews of any game this year.

With a metroid in the pipeline and a new Zelda on the horizon and the fact it's a third of the price of a Xbox One then I felt it's now or never.

First impressions on setting it up was I was amazed how much I liked the giant sized tablet controller and the smooth interface, lots of firmware updates and set up so for now no games tested until later this evening, downloaded the free version of Zelda Windwalker HD which I love and have the other 2 I mentioned and Zombie U on its way at a bargain £14.99 new.

You see games like Zelda,Mario,Pikmin you only see on a Nintendo and I really do enjoy loosing myself in these type of games, that not your typical hardcore type of game but offer a really enjoyable colourful time and experience .

Don't get me wrong I love my Playstation 4 to bits but sometimes I like a different type of game which at present and normally Sony And Microsoft don't provide.

I'm sure in another 3 months I will have a Xbox One but like the Nintendo Wii U at the time there is nothing on that system that at the moment interests me.

So laters it's Pikmin 3 time.....Timey style wink

Maybe not forever though. Must be very tempting not to develop for iOS and Android eh?

Before opening the thread I thought you were going to say you had bought a Xbox One haha smile

Well I did not expect you to get a Nintendo Wii U especially as the PS4 has only just launched lol I thought that would have kept you busy enough. Anyway glad you are enjoying it but it doesn't interest me at all but that because I am not a fan of the game franchises they have been milking for decades tongue

Timey you're really not selling me on the PS4, (Timeys PS4 sits gathering dust while he marvels at the Wii U's capabilities)
What Timey really likes is actually holding a big tablet in his hands up close and personal so his eyes can see wink
Just kidding buddy, I'm sure I'll own a PS4 in the next few months, and as for the Wii U I thought was a fun piece of kit that was lacking that killer piece of software to play! Have fun!

Now Jorkila the playstation 4 is awesome mate and so is Killzone Shadowfall and Resogun as a Arcade type shooter, but its time to repeat myself over again so sorry.

Nobody makes games like Zelda.Pikmin and Mario and a load of others like the Brilliant Nintendo,at times i just want to play a colourful platformer like the awesome Mario 3D or the lovely looking strategy game Pikmin 3 or the new HD edition of Zelda Windwalker that looks absolutely stunning.

Without these game releases the system would still be at Shopto.net,games sell consoles and apart form a couple of decent games on both the Xbox One and the Playstation 4 there is nothing out in the pipeline until March worth getting excited about.

And for the cost its a bargain and a lot of fun ,remember i could have bought this November 2012 but because of the poor games i left it.

I still have the wrapper on Cod Ghosts and to be honest i might even sell it on ebay as it really does not excite me that much and people seem to have forgot about that game pretty quick.

Battlefield on the other hand is brilliant, but myself and Nelly went into a server last weekend and it was unplayable so i hope i haven't got the same issues as Nelly else I'm going back to standard ADSL.

I nearly bought a PS Vita today. Went to HMV for one of the £99 deals they are offering http://www.hotukdeals.com/deals/white-100-black-ps-v...

Bloke told me I just missed the last one. Oh well not to worry it would just have ended up in a box with my two PSP's laugh

no wonder hmv are struggling. I went to buy one of their website except, they dont do any online business anymore, what year do they live in?

and their website seems designed for android with its interface as if pc's no longer exist.

That's the bundle I got with the Zelda themed tablet which I really like,as I've said I have been extremely criticle of Nintendo and there complete lack of respect for hardened gamers , seem to target the kiddie market with a lot of there games and many titles like just dance and the endless other junk aimed at a Family audience.

Zelda Windwalker was a Cell shaded classic on the GameCube ,wait until you download it and see it in glorious HD,it looks absolutely stunning mate and really does make a massive difference.

As I mentioned I also bought it for the new Mario 3D game and Pikmin, picked up Zombie U on the cheap so plenty to play over Christmas.

With all that and The Playstation 4 I'm in Gaming heaven which will keep me occupied well into the new year and the release of Infamous Second Son and Watchdogs and many more.

Shall also pick up that Titanfall if reviews turn out favourably ,but that game requires a Xbox One....more money wink

yeah I will get that new mario game, seen it tons of youtube videos.

and nintendo still feel youtube videos dont sell games, idiots.

my only concern is how many good wii-u games is there? the majority of games that I want are wii games and I think I will need to buy a wii controller to play them, not sure.

At least the system plays the Wii games unlike both the Xbox One and Playstation 4,my only gripe with the system is how it uses both the Tablet sized controller and the Television to function in many if not all of there games.

My problem is Eyesite is not what it used to be and i use a pair of Prescription reading glasses for close up stuff and distance glasses for Television viewing driving ect.

So now it looks like i need to go down the Bifocals route because when the game requests you use the tablet Mr Magoo here is pulling them funny Squinting type faces and I'm not going to keep swapping from reading glasses to distance glasses every couple of minutes.

it was actually something i mentioned when the console got released 13 months ago, seems Nintendo don't really care about the older people like me and think everybody is about 13 with 20/20 vision which sadly i haven't had for the past 10 years.

Watch the Magoo jokes and old age jibes flood in once Nelly and Spook read this thread tongue

Its quite laughable really to think of the canning i gave the Nintendo Wii and there new console the Wii U,last night a had a 5 hour straight gaming session playing just the Zelda remake and had a wonderful time and i generally felt great and entertained while playing it.

In fact i have actually played the Wii U twice as long as the Playstation 4 and i have only had it 2 days, had a hour with Pikmin 3 and that is drop dead gorgeous to look at and play,Zombi u and Mario 3D still in wrappers and I'm even considering that game The Wonderful 101 from Platinum games .

All this system needs is a totally new Zelda game which is coming and get Retro developers back and give us a Metroid and we have a great little gaming system.

And Nintendo need to concentrate on more Adult type games and lets leave the Dance, keep fit stuff alone for a while?

That's interesting you have played the Wii U longer than the PS4. Just shows it all down to the games - buy the console for the games you want. Nintendo has nothing I really want but I agree with you I would like them to concentrate on more adult games and become a serious contender with the PS4 and XB1. I think they need to stop with their casual/kiddie focus as that is covered by tablet games these days unlike in the Wii days, if they don't get that they will be dead.

I just can not get enough of this Nintendo Wii U and Zelda,i just want to play it all the time even though i have some really great Playstation 4 games.

There is just something quite fascinating about Nintendo and some of there game franchise like Zelda,so here i am playing a game thats 10 years old and I'm loving every minute but i generally hate retro gaming from the past.

Or is it the fact that classics like Zelda Wind Waker are just that Classics that don't age and have loads and loads of replay value after a decade of original release.

Its just great revisiting games like this and spending hours and hours just exploring a single dungeon and working out how to get here and there,i will say this though which i have already said in one of the previous threads, this HD remake looks absolutely amazing and so crisp and clear, for those that know and love Zelda this was the cell shaded one that many Zelda fans thought was the greatest Zelda game.

Im even thinking about downloading a classic Snes game from about 20 years ago after i have completed this, and that game chaps..Super Metroid

This thing is harder to setup than a pc, zelda has to be downloaded but the console has to be updated first, compared to sony/microsoft the system update is snail pace.

The gamepad has its own ac adaptor as well O_o.

I hope the annoying music can be turned of in the dash.

also when its updated I will be unplugging again to rerarrange cables etc.I noticed it has to be long ways and not enough room on my table so need to move the tv (yes this is in my tv not monitor)

The console can be layed horizontal or vertical, originally I had it standing tall with the 2 attachment plastic brackets, I then preferred it lying flat to be honest.

The update takes its time yes and I was surprised that there was no Ethernet port on the back so of to eBay and I am awaiting a LAN adapter for it so I can use this as a wired and not wireless connection.

The game pad has a cradle for charging and you will be using this a extreme amount of time as the battery life is no more than 5 hours max and that's pushing it,I generally put it back on charge every couple of hours of gaming because I don't want to have to wait 2 hours for a maximum charge and it running out while I'm playing.

As for setting it up I found that a piece of cake apart from the update and registration procedure ,quite surprised how they manage to get so many components in one box,put it this way it wouldn't be returned the same neat and tidy way..

So you had the Zelda bundle did you, have you played previous Zelda games as this is the sort of game you tend to like isn't it ?

well now the eshop is lagging like crazy, spinning circles galore and downloading zelda just fails with Error Code 111-9001

a ethernet cable would be handy yes.

zelda link to the past was a great game (2d on snes) ironically a direct sequal to that was released for the 3ds, it does seem the portables are getting all the good games except I dont like playing on small screens, whether or not I will like a 3d version of zelda remains to be seen.

fixed the wireless issue now.

Watched a bit of netflix as its first time I used netflix on a hdtv.

browsed the eshop and wow compared to xbox360 and ps3 is bare bones barely anything on there, and the wii virtual console has a massive 14 snes games at £5 each as well tongue

zelda is pretty good tho at least.

I think nintendo need to sort the battery issue on the gamepad and also make it chargeable from one of the usb ports on the console.
add tons more virtual console content at 1/5 the price.
the touchscreen is pretty bad on my gamepad, eg. typing in my netflix login info was a chore, having to press below the letter and press hard.
add way more content to the estore, I know the wii-u hasnt a huge game library but its like browsing a shop after zombies have emptied the town.

I can see why the media has slammed the device.

not tried any of the wii games yet like the last story.

I guess I need to get a wii controller.

Currently, only titles from the Nintendo Entertainment System and Super Nintendo Entertainment System libraries are available for purchase on the eShop. Most of the Virtual Console library available on the original Wii is also available on Wii U, but only through the implementation of the console's "Wii Mode" and Wii Shop Channel, to access and purchase Virtual Console titles. Wii Virtual Console games cannot be controlled using the Wii U GamePad, albeit the current versions of the system software support displaying Wii Virtual Console games on the GamePad screen, as if playing any other Wii game.

Planned future releases will include purchasing software from the Nintendo 64, Nintendo GameCube[citation needed] and Game Boy Advance libraries

also I think amazon deliver sundays permament now, wii remote scheduled for sunday also.

the wireless issue was my side, the wii-u doesnt take kindly to me having my 2.4ghz set to a 40mhz channel so I had to drop it down to 20mhz.

Funny how so many devices dont support 5ghz. The wii-u is a fairly new device and is 2.4ghz only.

After I fixed it, its "good enough", watched 4 hours of netflix content no buffering etc. Plus the download speeds are lower than the wifi limit, zelda came down at about 10mbit/sec.

I turned the volume off on my pad and reduced the brightness but seems there is no way to turn off the screen whilst using it, which if there was maybe the batteries would last for many days like my xbox360 batteries do. I think fixed internal batteries arent the way to go on controllers, best way is just to use normal removable rechargables which then can be cycled easily so eg. put the spares on charge whilst using others.

Well my LAN Adapter turned up yesterday and I'm expecting my Hybrid replacement hard drive today so I will swap both over when this turns up.

Not expecting a lot of Nintendo Wii U speed improvement though based on Nintendo online track history and the fact Ethernet port on the console should have been a given and should have been on the console in the first place ...really don't understand sometimes what Nintendo are thinking and where are they going.

Saying that Zelda 10 years old is a Masterpiece of how to make a brilliant game even better with a HD makeover....it's all I've played since I got the Wii Usmile
