the wireless issue was my side, the wii-u doesnt take kindly to me having my 2.4ghz set to a 40mhz channel so I had to drop it down to 20mhz.
Funny how so many devices dont support 5ghz. The wii-u is a fairly new device and is 2.4ghz only.
After I fixed it, its "good enough", watched 4 hours of netflix content no buffering etc. Plus the download speeds are lower than the wifi limit, zelda came down at about 10mbit/sec.
I turned the volume off on my pad and reduced the brightness but seems there is no way to turn off the screen whilst using it, which if there was maybe the batteries would last for many days like my xbox360 batteries do. I think fixed internal batteries arent the way to go on controllers, best way is just to use normal removable rechargables which then can be cycled easily so eg. put the spares on charge whilst using others.
