Does anyone know how much BT charge to move a master socket ? Is there a standard charge or does the cost vary with the complexity of the job ?
The socket is currently located in the lounge which is about 20ft away from the junction box where the line emerges from the ground outside, with cabling round the outside of the house.
I would like the master socket moved to the office, which is just the other side of the wall from the main junction box outside.
The job would be a very straight forward one and would shorten the length of cable to the master socket from the junction box outside to about 2ft. My router will then plug straight into that, giving me the best chance of getting a good signal.
Any ideas as to the cost ?
Thanks.

Yes Rik, it's all done for one fixed fee, no matter what or where. No, I don't recall the fee, but if the OP were to ring 150 I'm sure they'd be only too pleased to tell him. Also, 20 odd foot of cable isn't going to make much difference to the signal, to be honest.

You haven't seen the state of the cable....or the state of the partially open junction box full of water, dirt and spiders !
Thanks for the info, people. It's mainly for convenience and also to pre-empt any 'have you tried plugging in to the master socket' nonsense, in case I have problems with the connection at my new house.

If the wiring and block terminals are as bad you say then maybe you should report a fault. How come the block has water in it? Is it external? If so report a missing lid and you could also report a fault of phone ringing continuous when it is raining.
These are just a couple of thoughts and ways I used to get round charging when I worked as an engineer for BT.
BTW per occasion charging for jobs like that used to be

Things have changed a lot in 20 years. The pressure upon engineers to raise charges is a lot greater.

..and why is it not testing battery then ? These things do not dry out that quick. I suspect the cost of having the NTE shifted would be less than the 'fault not found' charges.

Are you telling me that engineers now charge for FNF?

Engineers have to provide a reason they did not charge on every single job.
If a punter books an engineer to rearrange their internal wiring, they are going to get billed for the visit.

I wonder how the ADSL chappie accounted for all the work he did to rationalise our internal wiring on one of our ADSL lines then......
I would have liked to see his excuse for not charging.... is there a box to tick for "Ample tea and biscuits supplied by genuinely helpful and friendly customer"?

A BT Technician will never unfairly indicate that the task was chargeable - however he might where te hcustomer is friendly / helpful indicate that the fault was within the BT side. But if he realises that a fault that does not and never has existed has been claimed whne the customer wants the master repositioning or internal rerumming thne yes he can make comments to thata effect and the customer may be charged.

Positively encouraged to do so. ........ 151 and SP's should be advising of such also.

Hi
Dureing a recent storm here in york Lightening struck the phone junction box for about 12 houses. When bt called to fix my line the engineer said that the line was fine but he needed to enter my house to confirm and test. the box in my house is my property he said not bt's and if the box was faulty he would have to charge me
