Size of line cards

[link to this post]

I'm curious as to the size of a line card.

I would think that they are quite small as the DSLAM's themself are not that large.

Would they be around an inch in height?

Are they much to look at or are they bland?

I have tried googling but not much useful info came up in the results

I didn't think they were that big!

I was thinking more of the size of a lighter.

Maybe you thought that 1 card supports 1 line, but I think they support upto 48 lines per card, maybe more with the lastest stuff.

Yes I did think that and so I am wrong with this way of thinking then?

Now I know where the 10" comes into it.

As each line card supports dozens of individual lines then I assume that an individuals line card itself is substantially smaller and they can be changed relatively easy like, for example, when people get connected to a broadband service for the first time or when people currently on ADSL change over to a cable broadband service assuming that, of course, they live in a cable area?

Dont understand what you mean as each line card supports maybe dozens of xDSL lines.
The cards fit in racks, which are in cabinets. The racks are premenantly wired to blocks on the exchange MDF where individual lines are connected/disconnected. The cards are left in situ and lines are wired to/from the MDF blocks as and when required.

Thanks mate, that explains it nicely.

It seems that with ADSL I have a lot to learn as I thought that a customers line card was removable from a rack when no longer needed
