Remove ring wire in master socket,brown wire loose

[link to this post]

I have opened the bottom half of the master socket but the brown wire is not in one of the terminals,it does not seem to have numbers next to each terminal so this is the order i see it.

top= blue
next=green
next= empty
next = orange.

The b/band is ok but just got a slight bit of crackling on the phone so have read removing the ring wire could help.

One thing for sure the colour code is incorrect but from what you say it very probably i the green you need to remove.
A pic is a good idea.
I advise you not to remove anything yet.

..... crackling on the phone .....

One thing to check is that you have all the microfilters fitted where they should be and that they all are working OK.
Plug the phone into the test socket to see if there is any crackling, if there isn't, then it could be caused by the extension wiring.

If you've got audible crackling on the phone then that's nothing to do with the ring wire and you should report it to BT as a voice fault (dial 150).

sometimes it can be, better advice would be:

"If you've got audible crackling at the test socket after trying a few different phones you should report it to BT as a voice fault (dial 151)."

AFAIK the ring wire is connected to the terminal marked No.3
