Pipex problem

[link to this post]

As of last night my Pipex connection only seems to work for about 5 mins. Router doesn't actually lose the connection, it just seems to stop working after a few minutes. If I force the router to disconnect and reconnect, things work fine for a bit, but not for long.

What could be causing this?

Is it precisely 5 minutes, or does it vary? Perhaps a timeout setting has been changed on your router.

Are you getting normal speeds?

Is it getting hot? (Is it a SpeedTouch?)

It varies. Last connection stopped functioning after 2m45s, I disconnected an reconnected things were fine for about 4mins. The router doesn't actually lose the connection - according to status and lights, I am connected. Traffic just seems to stop so I get "can't establish a connection to the server" messages in my browser.

Timeout setting on the router has not changed - as always, I have it set to keep connection "alive" and re-connect immediately whenever the connection is lost.

As RobertoS suggests it may be overheating or be on its last legs. Do the connection stats look OK? See http://www.dslzoneuk.net/adsl_line_stats.php

Seem to be OK. Is there anything in particular I should be looking out for?

Connection Speed 2272 kbps 288 kbps
Line Attenuation 41 db 12 db
Noise Margin 12 db 27 db

I might switch the router off for a couple of hours to cool and see if it makes a difference.

Those stats look fine. You are on a fixed speed 2Mbps product (as opposed to ADSL Max which goes as fast as your line can reliably cope with).

If you were on Max ADSL you might get a little more speed according to

http://www2.farina1.com/ADSL/default.aspx

You might get significantly more on ADSL2+.

But not a good idea to upgrade with Pipex and possibly get loced into a 12-month contrac.

I wonder if he has been LLU'ed?

Thanks for the replies so far. I don't think this is a router issue, have done a factory reset and still the same problem. Connection successful but no traffic after about 5 mins. I will try a different modem to be sure though.

What does LLU'ed mean and how can I find out/resolve?

You can punch your details in here (http://www.samknows.com/broadband/checker2.php) to find out if your exchange is LLU enabled. Post your results on here and the helpful folk will be around in no time

i'm having the exact same pipex issue over here in southampton - at the moment i suspect one of two things:

either problem at the LLU exchange, or a DNS related issue. i would add the the southampton exchange is Pipex LLU enabledd.

We are on the same exchange then, I think. At least that proves it is not my router.

It is suspicious that the exchange(s) are Pipex LLU, but doesn't prove that is the problem.

You might both find that there are threads in the Pipex forum on this site that give a tracert to try. Certain items in the tracert show whether you are going through the Tiscali/Pipex LLU system or still on the BT IPStream/Datastream system.

I get no mention of Tiscali.

Two entries ending .gs1.dsl.pipex.net, though.

I've no idea what the tracert target should be or what the giveaway is. That is also given in most of the relevant posts.

Being LLU'ed is the most likely explanation, subject to confirmation by the tracerts.

The only known solution is a MAC. Even that is fraught with dangers of loss of service, or if you were still on IPStream/Datastream then an accompanying ADSL Cease order on the line.
