Mypostoffice broadband with third party router

[link to this post]

I have a wired modem supplied by Mypostoffice; the broadband is adequate for my purposes but I have tried to connect with my own Netgear DGN2000 wireless router. I just cannot get this to connect to the internet - the PC router connection is fine. Has anyone out there used a third party modem with a mypostoffice broadband account successfully?
Searching the web I have found a number of people with this problem. I have inputted the correct user name and password and set the protocol to pppoA with vpi=0 vci=38 which again, I am pretty confident about. What other settings can I apply, anyone got an idea?

Yes. I put a Netgear 834G wireless router on for a lady who had bought the cheapest PO service with a wired-only router.

You say you have put the correct username and password in, but ISTR that I had to decode the password from the router as the service password was not something we knew at the time.

Phil,

thanks for this. Yes, I have decoded the password and username by backing up the settings of the wired router to an XML file. To be sure I got it right, I also called the ISP's helpline so I am very confident of my username and password. Useful to know that you have succeeded at this though, I was beginning to think you could only use a PO modem with this service.
Cheers,
Graham

I have a Netgear ADSL modem router DG83GT which works quite well with my PO Broadband. There were some initial problems in setting it up but it now works OK with just the occasional 'blip'. Sometime my wirless laptop, although it can 'see' the signal and records the strength as 'excellent' simply cannot stablish a connection. The recommended action offered by its trouble shooting Wizard is to disconnect the power from the router, wait a minute and the reconnect. This works every time, but I don't know why. So would be pleased if someone could tell me. Actualy the 'disconnect' time can be a short as 10 seconds,

I have been told that the router should be left powered up all the time but it seems pointless if disconnection cures a problem. Any thoughts any one?

You suggest that the problem may be overheating of the NetgearRouter. Mine stands vertically in the stand that was supplied with it and has plenty of air circulating around it. It does get warm, you may even say hot, but never too hot to touch.

I've used a WRT54G running 'Tomato' with a variety of ADSL modems & PO-BB with no problems at all...except a minor one: The PO-BB username is very long and exceeded the character limit imposed by Tomato's web-gui - I had to hack it in via command line.

I mention this 'cos I wonder if your netgear 'under the hood' is truncating the username. Are you really sure you've the correct username & password? PO-BB support will happily tell you what it is...you need to request the RADIUS user & pass, and it's different from your main email account.
