Is samknows no longer being updated?

[link to this post]

Not only do none of the many recent postponements of FTTC seem to be reflected there, which is odd as I understood it to be an automated process wrt BT data, but it looks as though there are a number of exchanges that are in the proposed OfCom Market 3 re-classification list that are not showing any LLU, or at most one plus BTW.

As to get on that list I would expect three LLU plus BTW it looks suspicious.

Anybody any views? An obvious one to look for is anyone on C & W LLU on an exchange recently activated by them, but I also wonder about any recent WBC enablements.

Don't know about the Broadband list but the ISP speed testing seems to have hit long grass, I'm thinking of turning my Neoware Box off as half the graphs on the status page don't work. Think he has other (American) fish to fry.

The graphs from my Linksys box haven't worked for a year or more, and emails to support enquiring about what's happening go unanswered.

"Think he has other (American) fish to fry. "

Certainly looks like it.

Shame really, it was a nice idea (and before he went US corporate he was doing a grand job).

They appear to be focusing on more profitable ventures such as the speed testing device they've developed. Working with OFCOM and the FCC. They used to post quite good broadband information and news on the blog, but not anymore. They've gone all corporate

Your right about market classifications not being updated, My exchange (EMBOSTO) is still stated as market 1, when in actual fact it should be market 3 as 3 LLUs have gone in recently.

Never requested mine. I consider 30GB to be quite moderate, and in actual fact would be the usage of just one person in my house, let alone four.

What was the benefit for us again? a pretty graph?

The benefit for the community at large was (and could still be) very similar in principle to the benefit(s) from the also-disappeared Netmonitor client - a large set of objective real-world performance information on various relevant aspects of an ISP's performance, based on trustable measurements and not some combination of subjective opinions and dodgy speedtests.

The benefit for the individual user was indeed a set of graphs, plus whatever warm feeling came from contributing to something bigger.

SamKnows did a bit more than Netmonitor and didn't rely on a PC being switched on 24x7.

Now afaict neither of them do anything and we're back to dodgy speedtests and subjective opinions frown

No, but 3LLUs + BT as wholesale = 4. Therefore Market 3, currently showing as market 2.

Not necessarily. The latest OfCom consultation document on upgrades to Market 3 is dated August 2010, and your exchange is not listed. It shows as staying as Market 2.

Upgrades are by OfCom declaration, not an automatic status trigger. I think there is also a number of connections factor.

When did TT enable it? Samknows doesn't give a date, but Sky was July 2010.

I don't think it's a dynamic process though, OFCOM produce a list and update it periodically. Otherwise pricing would be a bit chaotic.

My exchange was enabled sometime over Christmas an New Year I think, I've always checked to see if there was any possibility and there didn't seem to be.
Some time ago the Sky checker was telling me that our exchange (WNHOL) was due an upgrade in 3 months, however this seemed the same for most exhanges in the country so it was hard to believe.
I tried the Sky checker in Jan and it was telling me that the exchange had been enabled, checked Samknows and it was saying it wasn't, contacted them and they said they would contact Sky for info, and they did say that it might take some time to get a reply from Sky, Samknows has been updated now but there is no enablement date on it.
My connection went live yesterday, started off with a sync of 4095 downstream but today I'm already on 16382 so it's looking good

"edit" I have to say that Samknows responded quickly to my request when I asked if exchange was enabled, I think it was the same day and did reply to me in follow on email

That's good to hear, but I wonder what would have happened without a specific enquiry from you?

Maybe they did get a list from Sky of other new ones, and at least they didn't say they've not got time.

Hi all,

Just to clarify, SamKnows is still being updated. We will happily answer any questions you have if directed to [email protected]

We did recently receive an update from Sky, hence this has been updated in the last week.

Kind regards,

Thanks for that.

However, how come the OfCom Consultation Document of last August lists many exchanges which do not have the the 3 LLU plus BT Wholesale requirement according to your site, and we know of people on C & W LLU where their exchange doesn't appear.

That's what triggered the original "concerned" post smile. Sorry I can't give you a list as when they came up on here I wasn't recording them, and I'm only talking of half-a-dozen or so.

I wish I could answer your question regarding the Ofcom Classification document, but we didn't have any involvement in the report, and hence can't answer the questions, ideally they should be directed to Ofcom.

With regards to C&W LLU, I'll speak with them directly and ask for updated lists.

Not everything on the website is automated, so we are occassionally reliant of other people providing the information, hence sometimes things take longer than we might like.

As I mentioned in my previous post, if you see any errors, please do email us, because without feedback we cannot look to improve the site.

We do attempt to respond to every email which comes into the website, regarding any matter, including the performance monitoring trial, so if you are having problems with this, the data isn't reporting or similar, again please do contact us. We are here to help.

Many thanks,
SamKnows Team

One assumes that their proposed M3 ones have 4 suppliers, but samknows shows fewer. That was my point smile.

The SamKnows website certainly is still being updated.
Sky have finally gotten round (oops; an Americanism too far) to enabling our exchange (just had a letter through from Sky this morning) and the SamKnows site has already been updated to that effect.

See the reason why it has been updated tongue, in this post and this one.

I think as the poster says, with it not being an automatic feed to them, (as I believe the BT one is, or at least used to be), there can be a lag.

Quite a long one until the latest flurry.

Well that's certainly true; SamKnows is showing FTTC availability on 1st June, whereas the BT Wholesale checker reckons 1st July, so it is taking a while to get some of the updates through.
