Got a problem where the router's page says I'm connected at just short of 7mb, yet DL test sites and testing with actual files shows a 2mb speed (downloads of 200-250k/sec).
This is actually an improvement! I've just replaced the faceplate with an XTE 2005 version and that's made it much more stable.
My question is, obviously: how do I start using more of that near 7mb connection? The ISP is poor (Orange), but surely there must be more to it than that if it's connecting at such a high speed?

Please can you runs a BT Performance Test. (NOT the Beta). The paste the contents of the two results text boxes.
There's a slight possibility your IP Profile is stuck at a low figure.
What does the router say the down and up speeds are exactly please? That could be relevant.

Could be that the OP has only just resolved their problems, by fitting the faceplate, and now just has to wait for the IP profile to catch up ?

That's what I'm looking for, hence the request for the exact connection speeds. Those may suggest ADSL rather than ADSL2+, in which case you could very well be right, or they may indicate ADSL2+ in which case the IP Profile should have adjusted immediately. I'm just after a guide as the best path to go down to sort it .

So, it is the IP profile that is capping the through put speed.
If you have only just (in the last 24hrs, or so) fitted the service specific front plate, then it may take a few days longer for the profile to raise and meet your new stable sync.
|
|

Yep. That looks like ADSL, so a maximum of five days, and the OP must not mess with the connection in that time.
Judging by what must have been a huge percentage rise, I wouldn't be surprised if it hasn't gone up during the night.

You should see 6 Meg down, 0.37 up with those sync numbers (give or take a little).

Thanks for all the help so far.
Do I need to contact the ISP or will it just do it itself?

It is supposed to happen automatically, within five days. The bigger the jump that is coming, the sooner it should be. Like I said to you in my reply to Zarjaz, I thougt it might have happened by now. As it is, could be any time, but overnight is most common.
In some cases, (these days very rare), an IP Profile of 2000 can be "stuck" . You have to wait the full five days though. If it stays at 2000 then, you will have to get the ISP to have it reset. Probably by them triggering a new 10-day training.
'Tis a pig, but getting anything done before the 5 days are up is nigh on impossible and just gives you even more stress trying.
There is maybe one thing. Can you give us the link to what samkows says about your exchange, and can you find the noise margins and attenuations in your router stats. (That's why XRaySpeX asked you for full stats. Those figures matter).
Let us know how things go.

Where do I find the stats? Somewhere in the router login page? Netgear DGN1000, I think.

Start at page 66, and work down to 68. I'm not familiar with the router, so don't know the quick method.

Pity - no ADSL2+ available at the exchange, so 8Mbps connection is your highest possible. I was wondering if you could have upgraded your line, but you can't.
If BT ever enable WBC there, or an LLU supplier goes in, you have a potential 16Mbps connection speed.
Edit - see the Anon post and my reply to it.

What about YakYak they are in the OPs (Paul) exchange TalkTalk LLU is not that bad it's just the CS is'nt that great.
Then there are resellers who can make use of some of the TT network isn't their?
Isn't this the OPs exchange? http://www.samknows.com/broadband/exchange/SLCPL

Heyyyy!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I swear you have hacked into samknows and put TT there . I must be going blind, or it's one of the recent additions and literally wasn't there last time I looked. Probably going blind.

OK - new version .
As the Anon poster says, TalkTalk are in your exchange. It is almost certain they have "up to 24Mbps" ADSL2+ kit there, and you should get 14-16Mbps connection speed if you get onto that. There would be no IP Profiling.
Whether or not TT is suitable for you depends on your particular requirements, but as that poster says there are also resellers. With some reseller packages you are basically using the TT system but paying the reseller for better support and other goodies, and with other packages you would just be using the TT exchange kit and out from that to non-TalkTalk backhaul and routing.
Off the tip of my head I suggest you look at vivaciti, xilo/uno and ADSL24.

Caveat. Not all houses on a given exchange get served with LLU.
