Not an answer to your question but the obvious suggestion is don't use an ISP. Use a 3rd party mail host (which can be done pretty cheaply) and break the link with ISP mail. Far more flexible.

Have a read of this page on my website.

The domain costs went up on 1 March to £7.19pa due to Nominet, the .uk top level domain (TLD) authority raising their prices dramatically, and I haven't updated yet. Lite hosting, which is all most people need is still £14.99 per year. Total equivalent £1.85 per month.

There's a link to my preferred host on that page.

My broadband basic info/help site - www.robertos.me.uk. Domains, site and mail hosting - Tsohost.
Connection - AAISP Home::1 80/20. Sync 59504/15641kbps @ 600m. - BQM

I would second the suggestions not to use ISP email.

Some providers that don't support SSL email are TalkTalk, Plusnet and EE.

Sky, BT and Zen do support it.

One solution could be to use Google's Gmail.
Depending on what you need, either their free offering or

Are you sure they aren't just blocking port 25 outgoing? (Which isn't SSL of course). Very few ISPs block SSL ports.

Plusent have a trial SSL system. Some customers are able to send using it. The trial has been running for some time. You can find details on the Plusnet forum.

I think when the OP said they have their own domains they also meant mail hosting.

Plusnet don't block external host usage with SSL.

Whilst that may be so, I would never recommend something which is in beta, unsupported, and could be withdrawn without notice. The email SSL/TLS issue is a pretty damning example of how slow Plusnet can be at implementing something that they themselves believe should be implemented.

See my reply re Plusnet to another poster a couple of minutes ago.

Am I right you also have third-party mail hosting?

You can also look at Zen, IDNet, Uno, Aquiss, Claranet and many others.

Surely you aren't using TalkTalk SMTP server?

Thanks for suggestions my domains have thier own email servers, download is SSL, upload blocked by TT I'm getting around it by use gmail upload. Best find new reliable broadband provider, its not so easy to find out what providers allow third party outgoing mail with SSL.
TT Broadband is slow in the evening on ADSL2 it might say 8mbs on test but you can't watch youtube and 8pm.

SMTP with SSL can't be blocked on TalkTalk if you are connecting to Gmail SMTP with SSL.

I've used TalkTalk before and they didn't block any ports, not even port 25 outgoing.

Do pay for email hosting for your domains? If so, have you discussed the issue with them?

Yes spoke to them today, all in price with hosting, I used automated setup but outgoing server SMTP would not work on port 465 as they suggested.
Thinking of going to SKY?

There's no point. TalkTalk do not block any ports, so the issue does not lie with the ISP. If you let us know the SMTP server hostname maybe someone on TalkTalk can attempt to connect to it.

Ports 465 & 587 are not blocked on TT or any other ISP for that matter.

Don't forget as well as ticking the SSL box you must also tick the "My SMTP needs authentication" box and authenticate it by the same username & pwd as your incoming server.

More accurate to say :

Some providers that don't provide SSL email are TalkTalk, Plusnet and EE. However all these ISPs do support access to Authenticated SSL email from other email providers.

Agreed. That PM I sent him was offering to take a look at his email client settings and advise him. He's read it but not replied.

I was hoping either to help him fix it, or agree he had them right and TT were blocking it somehow. It's unlikely they are, but I'm staying open minded. They'd need to be doing some pretty nasty trick, and I'm sure we would have heard literally years ago if they were.

We would indeed!

I spend ages with EE users on how to set-up email, particularly SMTP, both on mobile phones & PC mail clients, both for EE's non-SSL Authenticated SMTP & other providers' SSL Authenticated SMTP, like GMail & Hotmail (errrr I mean Outlook.com), Even had one of those yesterday for Cambridge Uni email servers. And you'll be amazed (or you probably wouldn't) how many just can't get it right. You tell them SSL so they don't tick the SSL box, you tell them it needs Auth & they don't tick that box and then they wonder why the server says it can't connect!
