Why are my speeds so low?

[link to this post]

I know nothing about this guys so hopefully someone can help. I recently signed up to BT Infinity 1, a max 52mb. For the first 2 weeks I was getting a consistent 50mb, after the training period though its halved.

BT Speedtest is always over-generous, it says.
1. Best Effort Test:

Download Speed : 33.52 Mbps

2. Upstream Test:

Upload Speed : 8.84 Mbps

And thinkbroadband and every other speed test.

The stats look OK, except the uptime looks short. Have you rebooted recently ?

Edit--- Comment relating to previous post removed as the post has been changed.

The sync speeds are the maximum for the 55/10 product, so the snr figures are high as would be expected. So nothing wrong with the connection speed. Question for the OP - are your speed tests using a wired Ethernet connection?

Speed tests really ought to be carried out over a wired connection to rule out wifi issues.

A wired Speedtest should show your problem is with Wi-Fi and your connection is fine.

Double check speeds with Ethernet

[re: deleted] [link to this post]

Wi-Fi can be impacted by so much, and a number of BT customers are seeing IPv6 slow downs, so use the Run IPv4 button you should see at https://www.thinkbroadband.com/speedtest

The shape of the graph suggests variations and most commonly seen with Wi-Fi

An update on this folks, Ive spoken to BT about this who say Ive also had the speedboost applied, they say Im getting max my line can get, I believe thats [censored]. I think my line can take up to 80mb. Anyone know how to check this? If I go to the infinity order page it says I can get up to 80

BT haven't upgraded you, they are talking rubbish as usual. You are still on 55/10 sync speeds. You need to convince them that you still need to be upgraded, best of luck!

Have you done a wired speed test as suggested?

If not, go and do one. Then post the results.

Right folks wired is coming in at 48, wireless 24, Something wrong. I spoke to BT again the asure me I have the speed boost applied,

This all came about as I wanted to leave BT due to the price increase, they could not do anything about the price but the speed boost was the sweetener, If the speedboost doesn't work or my line cant handle anymore I may leave.

So, here you say the wired is coming in at 48 and another link shows it to be 50 - broadly similar.

You have an up to 55 Mbps which means that you would only get 52 Mbps throughput.

So, with a potential 52, and seeing 50, you are very close and at 5:30 in an evening when most school kids are home and overloading everything some minor congestion may occur. I would not be unhappy with 50, or even 48 in these circumstances.

Your low figures of 35 are almost certainly WiFi related and not the VDSL connection.

Agreed, except that the OP keeps insisting he has been given a speed boost from earlier stats it should do pretty much the full kahuna .... maybe theyve just not actioned it yet ?

I agree it seems to be a wireless problem. The question is how do I fix it? We can be talking as much as a 20mb difference with only my phone using it. When the kids etc go on Ive seen it as low as 12

But his OP says:

"I know nothing about this guys so hopefully someone can help. I recently signed up to BT Infinity 1, a max 52mb. For the first 2 weeks I was getting a consistent 50mb, after the training period though its halved."

with stats that show him syncing at 55 ... and complaining he is at 30+.

[re: deleted] [link to this post]

If you kids are using it they obviously you will lose some more on te connection to your phone - the WiFi is also being shared and if it cannot serve a full 50+Mbps when you are the only user then there is a good chance it will be much the same with multiple users.

Start by proving exactly what each device can get using wired connections. then what they get when wireless.

Try rebooting the hub. Or reset it to default and start again.

What is the wireless device you are using for testing?

Also change the naming of the WiFi channels and get the test device to forget the existing BT Hub Wi-Fi channels and then only teach it about the one with the name that is for the 5GHz channel.

2.4 GHz can be highly congested from neighbours and other kit that uses the same band, but 5GHz is less affected and can also manage higher speeds, but it will not reach as far through walls.

If that is the BT Wholesale speed test then no point at all running it over a wireless connection, and it was never intended as a day to day speed tester

[re: deleted] [link to this post]

It was not clear, as you just said it was an IPv4 test.

It shows the 50 Mbps being reached but notice how the speeds dip away quickly, suggesting some congestion somewhere. Time to do tests at different times of day to see things improve when its not peak time

NOTE: No point doing any more wi-fi testing, as that adds a big variable, Ethernet is more reproducible

This has solved the issues smile Right I separated the two, the 5ghz has a 5 added on to the name now, so I connected to it and a speedtest gets me 48mb over wifi, Connecting to 2.4 is still [censored] speed so this is the problem, 2.4 is congested I think

It may depend on the channel you're using on 2.4GHz. Instead of using Smart Wireless, select a channel manually.

So, your problem is wireless - BT has no control over how your devices work wirelessly.
