Hi
I have just gone to BT/EE with a 150 connection, previously it was about 80.
When I run a speed test from my iphone i get the 150mbs
but when i try from my pc i only get 80/90?
I thought maybe an older network card to i bought a new wireless dongle - but still only 80/90.
What else should I be looking for on my PC? (apart from a new one!)
thanks
ian

Try with a cable first as there are too many factors with wifi to factor in.
OPNSense on Topton N100 - SWISH Fibre 900
NextDNS (subscription) - Unifi for Wifi

I am already hard-wired into the router. but maybe the cable is too old. I'll replace it and see.
thanks for your reply, much appreciated.

What physical speed is your PC connected at when you connect using a cable?

so, just been testing it and the cable is an old 100mb cable. So I have ordered a new 1gb one.
This should take me a step forward at least, though it doesnt explain why the wifi on my phone works at 150mb but on my pc only 80mb.
but i am happy to be moving forwards!
Thanks for your reply.

Maybe the new dongle is only connecting to the slower 2.4Ghz band and your phone is connecting to the faster 5Ghz band. Irrespective, I would recommend using a good Cat 6 cable over Wifi every time.

Probably cheaper with a cat 5e cable.

Are you using a VPN, Antivirus software? Could be a huge number of issues.

yeah that is true, and i am slowly getting to the answer, so thanks for your comment.

yes indeed, that is almost always the best best. just the walls are so thick, so have had to order a major drill as well!

yeah spot on. didn't clock that before - but wifi says 300mbs, but i didnt clock it was on 2,5ghz.
thanks for replying.

300Mbps as an advertised capability of the Wi-Fi adapter is likely to be two stream Wireless-N (Wi-Fi 4) which is now a 15-year-old standard. Your iPhone will be Wi-Fi 6 (802.11ax) at a minimum unless it's really old which matches what the hub is equipped with.

But even with a VPN it should go faster unless he has a naff VPN, I can get around 450Mb/s with my VPN on. Antivirus software also should not make much difference, certainly not on a speed that low in the first place.
Oh that looks awful, speed that low in the first place, talking of 150Mbs being low

A cable which doesn't have all four pairs connected, or is of the "crossover" variety, supports only 100Mbps ethernet. You can easily check if this is the case by looking at the network device settings and see if it has negotiated a 100M or a 1G connection.
By the time you've taken off IP and ethernet header overhead, a speedtest service will report just over 90Mbps.
Any less than that will be due to Windows overhead, poor NIC device drivers, antivirus etc.
Wifi isn't going through that ethernet so it can do whatever the wifi can do. Wifi 5 (802.11ac) typically achieves around 400Mbps real-world throughput if you're very close to the router.

ok, many thanks for the reply candlerb.
i am awaiting a delivery of a new 1gb cable and a wifi dongle that does 5ghz, so i will see how that goes, and maybe report back? in case someone else has the same issue?
cheers again,

I *think* 1Gbps can work with a cross-over cable.. Provided it's all four pairs connected.

er? 150Mb.s is pretty fast, even 80Mb/s is fast compared to some, but now seem to be talking about it being slow.

Yep, FTTC or FTTP 80/20 are reasaonable for most peoples at home. Quicker downloading is FTTP 160/30 or 330/50 are fine for now.

A crossover cable just has pairs 2 and 3 swapped around, everything is auto MDI-X now so as long as your cable is built to an actual standard and uses all 4 pairs it will do gigabit and faster all day long.

Ah, I see what you mean, yes i was fine with 36Mb/s, but it is crazy how we are now saying that 150Mb.s is slow, when it reality it is not.
As for speed being reached, a lot of people tend to use Wi-fi and then wonder why they can't get the speed are paying for.

That true as most old device are useless wifi 2.4GHz or old network card on the pc or laptop. But lucky me, I have PC System with 2.5Gbps Ethernet network card and router now on wifi 6 as my new mobile support wifi 6 as it will cope well with my current G.fast 255/33 in winter but it slower down in hot summer down to 206/30 but when FTTP come I might go for 330/50 depend on the price. If it too much and go for FTTP 160/30. I wouldn't bother get 550/75 or 1.8Gbps/110 from Openreach FTTP with crazy price.

They do, most modern switches auto detect the cables, I have different types of cables all work at 1Gbit and 2.5Gbit.

Thanks a very useful little tool.
Once I had purchased new patch cables as well, I am up and running at 150mbs.
Thanks all!
