Moved house? BB not working? this may help

[link to this post]

This may be useful to less technically aware people like myself who are moving house...

I recently moved to a new house. We had the phone line turned on and ordered BT Total BB at the same time. Unknown to me at the time, we were given the previous occupants number and to compound the problem they were also a BTTBB customer. After 1 week the equipment arrived and the router showed BB signal on the line but we couldnt get on the internet (probably waiting to get the tag cleared) . Initially there was a problem with BT wholesale completing the order.Four weeks passed and a lot of time on the blower to the [censored] Indain BTTBB call centre and UK based order management, service etc the order was flagged by wholesale as complete. Still no internet. Eventually the issue was tracked down to the exchange as something needed changing there. This took a further two weeks to identify. The whole problem stemmed from us taking over the phone number already at the address and ordering both phone and BB at the same time. It was also down to the complete incompetence of BTTBB tech and service support and Wholsale for not identifying the issue quicker. In all it took 8 weeks to get online at the new house.
My advice would be:
1- Make sure you get a number that has been out of service for a good while
2- If going with BT dont order the line and BB at the same time
3- Get ISP to check for existing BB products and clear tags
4- If you still cant get authenticated, point out the exchange may need a visit from a "frame" engineer
5- Have LOTS of patience:)
If this saves someone some time and a lot of hassle then it will have been worth typing all this in !

Question!
Im pretty certain that the previous occupant was on an older fixed speed rate. When I first checked the number on the BT line check it quoted "speeds up to 2MB" I currently get about 3.6 MB. Would they have not been regraded automatically to Max ADSL when it became available? If not would this explain why the line checker is 1.5MB wide of the mark?

not necessarily, they would have been sent an email inviting them to upgrade to Total Broadband. The checker gives two speeds, for fixed speed products and for Max. Sounds like you're quoting the fixed speed result.
