problem with secure sites

[link to this post]

For the last six weeks I have been having problems with my broadband. It takes ages to download secure sites, and often they don't download at all.

My service provider is Talktalk, who have instructed me to change various values on my router, but this hasn't worked. I took my laptop and router to a friends house, who also uses Talktalk, and everything was working fine there. My internet speed seems to be ok, although I wonder if it "drops out" from time to time.

When I just ran a diagnostic test on the router it came up with the following result, which I don't know if it is relevant of not.

Test the connection to your local network
Test your Ethernet Connection: PASS
Test your Wireless Connection: PASS

Test the connection to your ADSL service provider
Test ADSL Synchronization: PASS
Test ATM OAM F5 segment ping: FAIL
Test ATM OAM F5 end-to-end ping: FAIL

Test the connection to your Internet service provider
Test PPP server connection: PASS
Test authentication with ISP: PASS
Test the assigned IP address: PASS
Ping default gateway: PASS

Can anyone suggest anything else I can try? Thanks in anticipation!

Problems with secure sites are often caused by incorrect MTU settings causing packet fragmentation. What value are you using?

download DrTCP.exe and set the MTU value of the interface you connect to the router to a value of 1430 and see if that helps.

Hello,

I would suggest that you try an MTU of 1400 if this doesn't help try 1350, both have been proven to fix similar issues to the one you are experiencing.

Thanks

Thanks for all your suggestions so far.

The 2nd line Talktalk advice centre has already got me to change the MTU to many, many different values (I have spent many hours on the phone to India trying to sort this out!). So far changing the MTU value has had no effect.

I'm not very technically minded when it comes to computers, so I can't understand why my router and laptop would word perfectly at my friend's house (who also uses Talktalk), and both my router and both laptops worked perfectly for the 1st month with Talktalk, and also worked perfectly with my previous internet provider. If anyone has any other suggestions I'd be very grateful.

Thanks for your suggestion. Are USB and ethernet types of cables? If so, I'm using wireless internet, so would that apply in my case?

I've been thinking more about my Internet dilemma, and I am wondering if the problem I'm experiencing could simply be due to a poor connection from Talktalk's side, and nothing to do with my computer and router setup.

I seem to have tried everything that people have suggested, both on here and on the Talktalk helpline, and nothing has had any effect. Although my computer and router worked fine on my friend's house (who also is with Talktalk), he lives in a different area. Is it possible the Talktalk broadband service can be more reliable in a different area (he lives closer to London than me)?

I'd be grateful for anyone's advice. If I can prove to Talktalk that it's their fault, not mine that my internet is bearly usable then maybe I'll have justification to insist that I break the 18 month contract with them, and move to someone else. Also, I'd like to be confident that if I move to another provider I don't experience these same problems.

Thanks for your help.
