EU Data Retention Directive provokes widespread

UK internet service providers will have to all store communication information from customers for a full year starting on 15 March, as part of the controversial EU Data Retention Directive.

Under the directive, details of every email, phone call and text message sent or received, including information such as IP address and time of use, will have to be recorded.

Better start using encryption then.

Or use SSL encryption to an e-mail server based outside the EU's juridstiction.

How would that help? They are not being asked to retain the content which is the part that would be encrypred.

Maybe that is yet to come. Then maybe somebody will set up national courses for us to learn to speak Encrypt. And the mobile phone companies provide SMS encryption . To be announced on April 1.

Which is probably most of the email traffic around ?

So presumably if I set up my own domain hosted overseas (which most are) and use that for my mail rather than that of my ISP, then nothing gets recorded in the database as the ISP mail systems plays no part in the process ?

Your email traverses your ISP's betwork.

I would say it gets logged. The best answer is a VPN tunnel.

I think nothing would get logged, otherwise the ISP would be sniffing packets which is of dubious legality at the moment.

Of course this exercise of Government stupidity will make no difference to criminals.
