Unusual speed problem

Hi all,

My broadband (pipex) was slowing down somewhat and i swapped to virgin 10meg cable which is faster but i am still getting the same special problem sometimes.

It is most common in outlook, but happens in internet explorer often as well. Everything appears to freeze for a good 30 seconds or more. So i do a speed test and it says 8-9 meg....

I just ran a speed check today and got a VERY interesting result which i do not understand. Yes it came up and said 9 meg download speed.

Then it said testing upload speed and NOTHING happened at all for about a minute. Finally it got going and went up to about half a meg which is fine for upload.

This i think perfectly identifies my problem, at odd times i am getting ZERO bandwidth and then back to normal. I thought this was a contention ratio problem on the pipex ADSL but I am getting the same problem on virgin cable.

Different technology, different routers etc. Anyone have any idea what causes this??

I am using a pc with windows XP latest service pack on it.

I am running Kaspersky anti virus

I can't think of anything else that could be causing this/

Are you connecting wired or wireless to the router?

If wireless is it a Belkin adapter?

DNS lookup time ? what servers do you use.

CPU load ?

Put a Live CD linux in the drive and see if it's the same.

Thanks guys.

Wireless connection. I have 3 USB dongle thingies from different manufacturers.

Also have a mac and a windows laptop

I have not been scientific but the mac gives the impression it is not as badly affected....

I am sorry the other questions went over my head....

It is a dual core processor and usually doing nothing else, also has 2 gig memory which is a fair bit for XP

No idea what servers I am using? When it does this it does it for all sites. BBC news as well as slower sites such as boardgamegeek.

Try running TcpOptimizer on the Windows laptop. Not on the Mac. If you use different dongles you may need you have to do it for each the first time you swap to it.

Also rule out the wireless by using an ethernet cable
