Online Storage any recommendations

[link to this post]

Could anyone recommend a reasonably priced Online Storage facility?

I see Winzip do one and Comodo too at around $4.95 per month. I don't need much space probably only around 250MB after using ultra compression with 7-Zip, but i guess a 1GB service is around the minimum most seem to do.

I just started thinking about this after getting quite a lot of newsletters about this from companies where I've registered software. Considering my general correspondence and even my TeamFortress 2 Map creations could be lost if there were a fire or even a flood and although I have backups, is that good enough?

Do any of you use online backups (not neccessarily for your PC files but for important documents etc) for this very reason?

I know several people who have had their gmail accounts deleted ( along with all the data ) for doing just that, I would tread very carefully indeed smile

I have to confess to not knowing of many online storage solutions, but my girlfriend makes use of a free 5Gb from MS....Skydrive or something.

Edit: It seems I'm a little out of date, it's 25Gb now smile

Try www.dropbox.com. you get 2GB of storage for free and if you need more you can buy more. I have a referral link that will give you (and me) an extra 250mb storage for free but cannot post it here due to the forum rules. PM me if you are interested.

Thanks for the information about gmail accounts being deleted if they're used to store data. It doesn't worry me as I delete all my gmail messages once a week anyhow!

Thanks for the suggestions guys smile

That Microsoft one at 25GB (far more than I need) looks good. So both MS and Dropbox do free versions, is there a catch?

For the Microsoft skydrive I think you just have to make sure that you log into the account at least once every 90 daysor something like that. I've got it and log in once a month and it's been fine - I've been using it for around a year (or so)

Many thanks.

I started signing up for the windows live thing so I could access skydrive and it was asking loads of info, ie address, D.O.B. and I started thinking, this is what it "costs" my personal data.
Then there was another option for a limited account or words to that affect, so i chose that option for the Windows live ID thing. But this limited thing seems fine, I'v signed into SkyDrive and are using it now.
It's clearly designed for documents and photos, even with that 25GB cap and it appears that you have to manually select upto files seperately to upload (a max of five at a time).

The only problem I have found with it is the file limitation size at 50MB. For my Teamfortress Map Builds which I have many of, I had to use the file split/span function of 7-zip and use the "Ultra" LZMA compression function to break the file into just less than 50MB chunks.

Sadly it wouldn't be practical to store large Acronis true Image image files, even though the allowance is high. Nevertheless it's a free option that has allowed me to store my map builds/map progress somewhere else which is ideal.

If you use voucher code XMAS09 on humyo.com you can get 50% off there humyo Premium service. This will mean you can get 100GB for a year for £23 which is a bargin tbh!

There is also no file size limit, you can chuck up a single 100GB file if you want smile ideal for sharing map and creating mirrors for downloads of them.

It also lets you stream music and movies which is the main thing I use it for smile just putting a load of xmas songs on there now.
