NewNet use a small amout of LLU.

LLU is process name, rather than a technology.

Two types of LLU

1. SMPF (shared) phone line remains on BT hardware with WLR and CPS phone line rental and calls options available. The broadband is unbundled, i.e. taken off BT Wholesale hardware and connected to the other parties broadband hardware.

2. MPF (Full) both the phone and broadband is unhooked from BT kit onto the third parties hardware, e.g. TalkTalk

There are two main avantages of LLU:

* Technology - by installing their own equipment in the exchange an LLUO can provide better access than BT. Be are the classic example of this. BT are only just in the middle of rolling out ADSL2+. Be have been doing that since 2004

* Cost. By using their own backhaul (the link from the exchange back to the ISP) rather than relying on BT they better manage the costs. This allows them to offer either a better service or a cheaper service.

Be have been doing that since 2004

BE was formed as Avatar Broadband Ltd in October 2004, but the first trials did not start until August 2005 and Be* officially launched in September 2005

3rd advantage: BT's method of Dynamic Line Management (DLM), called IP Profiles, is slow to return line to optimum speed after a serious series of disconnections or noise. Could be upto 10 days.

1999: Freeserve 48K Dial-Up => 2005: Wanadoo 1 Meg BB => 2007: Orange 2 Meg BB => 2008: Orange 8 Meg LLU BB => 2010: Orange 16 Meg LLU BB

Yes the slow response of the BT equipment to a minor blip in my line is one of the reasons I was thinking of maybe going to BE from PlusNet, I currently get around 2.2Mbps though that can vary, and pay £15.99 per month for that!!! I used to get around 2.6Mbps then there was a disconnection and it dropped, it's always seems far too twitchy the BT equipment to a minor blip. I reckon if a sparrow lands on the line it registers.
I wonder if I might get a bit more speed from BE? the line is pretty stable, also no Profile, sounds good to me. We are about 3.5 to 4Km from the exchange. My Belkin router shows Current Sync rate is 3392Kbps but it has been up to 3616Kbps the other week. Noise Margin Dwn 5dB & Noise Margin up 17. Atten Dwn 54 & Up 31.
