UK.gov plans net surveillance by 2015

[link to this post]

Government measures to massively increase surveillance of the internet will be in place within five years.

In its departmental business plan, published today, the Home Office said it aims that "key proposals [will be] implemented for the storage and acquisition of internet and e-mail records" by June 2015.

The plan is the latest incarnation of the Interception Modernisation Programme (IMP), a much-delayed initiative, backed by the intelligence agencies, to capture details of who contacts whom, when and where*, online.

1984 is coming. Will the sheple believe in the propaganda, that it's for our own good, when it's not.

Don't use the net...nothing to fear. smile

Once you take out the terrorists, the pervs and the file sharing, there's little need to monitor the net traffic (perhaps hacker activity). Then the system is redundant. Being none of the above, I don't mind if they get a copy of any of my e-mails. I wouldn't use e-mail for anything legal or crucial to my privacy.

"Nothing to hide, nothing to fear" (NTHNTF) is a myth that is built on certain false assumptions, and these assumptions are never questioned when it is wheeled out as an argument to support whatever draconian surveillance measure is being pushed out in the face of citizen opposition (commercial organisations rarely try such an approach, since it dooms them to failure from the very beginning). These assumptions include:

Given that your second link is entitled "Justifying mass surveillance", I'd like to point out that my post doesn't 'justify it', but calls into question the need for such tools and techniques, if the perceived threats are removed.

One could refer to the Police as state-sponsored enforcement, but if there were no crimes, there would be little requirement for them.

The second link says "Justifying Mass Surveillance. A Fallacious Myth" If you read it properly. smile

A multitude of problems can arise from continuously gathering too much data. Trusting the government and private companies -- entities full of people, some of which will inevitably have an immoral few -- make it easier for data to be misused and error prone.

A lot of silly people use the, nothing to hide and nothing to fear argument. That is what I though you was saying.

Will be canceling my broadband in 2015 then, if this get's the go ahead.

Laughable. Not only would it be a huge technical feat to inspect such a huge volume of traffic, they'd never manage to work out every single application protocol ever written in a way that'd give them the information they wanted.

Yet another plan for the Internet thought up by some clueless nobody.
