Thats similar to mine but mine has 3 wire dont know what that is used for maybe for earth purpose really dont know and goes into 6smaller wires I.e orange blue white etc to socket so if there is only 2 main wire with 1 spare I really cant see how they can use for another isp to be installed on that drop cable they surely have to put in a new cable to pole.already got stung by bt , with no fault found although my attenuation has 12 db more than 15 doors away and I know both houses use same cabinet although mine is 15 doors further from cabinet..

No, they just join the exchange end of the other pair (via the cab) to the other ISP's network (either via hardware or by software).

EDIT: Are you user toforseven as well? Otherwise what's he on about?

I'm not quite clear. If I have a 2nd spare pair in the dropwire to my house, how far back does it continue? To the pole, the cab or the exchange?

I know when I had a 2nd line installed the eng said the 2nd line was already there and all he had to do was join it up. After he installed the 2nd master socket I then had a 2nd phone #.

Your dropwire goes to the distribution point. At the distribution point, the pairs in use (and some formerly in use) are joined to pairs in multicore cable running to the cabinet.

And the pairs never in use terminate there? My spare was never in use previously.

the black box atop the pole has connector strips, the unused wires in the drop wire won't be attached to them I guess.
