Silly question, but aren't the filters supposed to prevent the ring signal from interfering with the ADSL signal? Or does this interference occur between the exchange and the PCP / PCP and the house?

No, the filter does not stop it.

The DSL signal is passed straight through from the incoming A & B legs of the line. The filter is there to stop DSL signals appearing on the audio side.

There is another filter on the modem which stops the audio band from reaching the modem front end.

Thanks for clearing that up.

How many CRC errors / Error Seconds would you consider normal during (for example) 10 seconds of ringing? (In the test socket so no extension wiring issues)

I'm a bit confused how to tell if I've actually got a problem (e.g. High Resistance) as suggested by MrSaffron, or if the errors I'm seeing are actually normal and I'm suffering from "confirmation bias" when I think it's lagging due to the phone ringing.

Other than looking at the number of CRC errors / Error Seconds, is there any other way to tell if i actually have a problem or not?

Nearly all lines will generate some errors when the phone is used at the same time. What fault actually occurs, if you are just trying to report that using the phone generates errors, then you are going to struggle.

eh?

If a line error rate increases during calls and especially if the snrm also drops and of course really especially if the DSL disconnects its a sign of a HR fault or dodgy NTE5. Proper working DSL will not have an increased error rate during phone usage.

Of course your comment makes sense if openreach are training engineers to claim its normal.

It's sounding like there's disagreement as to whether I have a fault or not.....

I'm thinking I'll put up with it, given it's a £130 gamble and most people call us on our mobiles anyway.

If it is a HR fault, would getting it fixed improve my connection in general, or would it only stop issues when the phone went? If it would improve the connection then it may be worth the risk...

I think the most likely outcome is an engineer will say nothing is wrong and nothing will get fixed.

If that's your only issue I would maybe swap out the front part of the nte5, and see if it helps, and then leave it be.
