Re: Getting another line installed

Sorry ive got another question as its been bothering me. Are openreach able to use existing pairs in the wire coming into my house for broadband? I know there are 4 wires in total, 2 doing nothing and 2 connected to the master socket and the pole outside thats "splits" the underground cable between me and the neighbour, sorry i don't know the correct term for it so i'll call it a splitter for now so will there be enough room in this "splitter box" "at the top of the pole outside" to connect my 2nd broadband line?

Yes.

The indispensable man or woman passes from the scene, and what happens next is more or less the same thing as was happening before.
My broadband basic info/help site - www.robertos.me.uk. Domains, site and mail hosting - Tsohost.
Connection - Plusnet UnLim Fibre (FTTC). Sync 57676/14040kbps @ 600m. - BQM

UPDATE Getting another line installed

[re: deleted] [link to this post]

Just thought i'd record what was going on just incase anyone will be interested in the future by doing the same.

Bt engineer turned up and installed a master socket for my 2nd line, he used existing pairs in the current line coming to my house, 5 min job however my current line does not seem stable, the speed is fluctuating between 1 and 5 mbps and the ping is quite high

Bt speed test results
https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B6P4YHfJb6--SFVJOEt...

router stats
https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B6P4YHfJb6--VGZiZUF...

The broadband isn't currently up and running, just the phone at the minute on the 2nd phone socket, it might just need time to settle but doesn't seem right to me

Windows 10 is hitting traffic levels at a number of a providers so might be that if the line stats are otherwise stable

it might be but i don't think it is, did a few tests before he came and all where showing 5.9 mbps with a ping around 46ms to 60ms, he disconnected my current socket a few times and with me changing the router dlm has kicked in and put me on a 5mbps profile but that doesn't effect ping so im a little baffled, i'll do some more testing through the week i just hope it sorts itself out as i can't be bothered with engineer after engineer.

Don't know how it got all the way down to 2 mbps profile

Because it only needs one sync at the speed that requires the 2 Mbps IP profile for it to go that low, and then will only rise slowly once things do improve.

As MrSaffron says. But with a sync jump that big there's a fair chance of an overnight rise to near full speed. Small jumps can take up to 5 days for the IP Profile to rise.

I may have misunderstood your post but there's no splitting going on. Think of the box at the top of the pole as a junction box. There's usually 20 pairs in the cable going up the pole, so when your two lines are working you will be using two of those pairs. You don't share any pairs in the Openreach network, not if you have broadband anyway.

Yes it was my questioning that was the problem lol, even i didn't know what i was talking about but i assumed there was only enough room in the junction box for just the 2 houses and just for 2 master sockets and was getting at that there is 4 wires running through the cable to my home, 2 of them wires connected to my current master socket and the other 2 wires "pair" sitting in the bottom of that master socket not connected to anything, but i can confirm that they did use the spare pair in the line that connects from the junction box to my house, hopefully that explained what i was asking but then again i was confused while typing it. laugh
