Internet access through Vodafone tethering or ?

[link to this post]

Andrew - (MrSaffron) please transfer this to the correct forum if I have got it wrong.

A friend has recently moved in to a holiday home in Milborne Port in Somerset - DT9 5HJ which will probably be occupied for holidays from tike to time & otherwise for 4-6 days a month.

With encouragement from me she was hoping to access the internet by using her Vodafone Samsung Galaxy smartphone as a hub to which she could tether her tablet & printer; and drop the landline presently installed.

We checked on site a few weeks ago and all seemed well in a brief five minute test. Now she says that the internet connection is intermittent, and slow, although voice seems OK.

Im going to visit at the weekend and will see if the mobile hotspot which I use when travelling, a Huawei E586, will provide a better solution with a Three data SIM.

If push came to shove might install a copper line for broadband only, probably A&AISP in that case.

Thoughts & recommendations please.

Mobile phones don't work everywhere. Each of the main network operators publishes coverage maps on the internet. Coverage can be checked by using a PAYG Sim for each of the main networks in an unlocked mobile phone. Vodafone FTTC is quite cheap and could be considered if not to far from cabinet.

Maps which are grossly inaccurate where we live with only 3 giving a true representation of the coverage (or lack thereof).

Thanks for the responses to date.

I said that I have been told that "the internet connection is intermittent, and slow, although voice seems OK".

Further interrogation reveals that the Samsung Galaxy Edge 'phone is loosing the tether. It was all set up and working OK, the 'phone & tablet tethered to it were left in one place, with a good 4G signal, but an hour later the tether was discovered to be broken & had to be reset. Madam says that the 4G signal is 3 to 4 bars throughout the house.

I have found tethering to be reliable once set up, has anyone any ideas of what the problem might be?

Maybe not the answer, but some phones have a setting to turn off the hotspot after a period of inactivity.
