Up the Pole

[link to this post]

Having walked the dogs and sitting in isolation I have a quick question. During the dog walk I noticed a triangular shaped box on the top of a telephone pole and wondered what it was.

Box on top of Pole

Nothing more exciting than a good (old fashioned) BT78, a 20 pair copper distribution point.

From here there would be dropwires going to various premises fed by that DP

Norton is reporting an intrusion attempt from allmygoodlife dot com from that link. (The picture does appear as expected).

Malwarebytes doesn't like it either, on the grounds of adverts containing malware.

My broadband basic info/help site - www.robertos.me.uk. Domains, site and mail hosting - Tsohost.
Connection - Three 4G, tbb tests normally 35-45Mpbs down, 65Mbps off-peak, 9-24 up.

Internal small white 8wire krone block is BT78.

BT76 20pr BT86 10pr.

Version A came with factory sealed pre terminated 12m coil of cable. B - 24m coil. This a godsend for junior jointers on the gang who previously had to pre wire screw terminals.

C was terminated onsite with crimps in the back and identified by white chain on lid. Lightning protection variant was also available

Very weatherproof kit. Manufactured by Egerton. Who were excluded from the tender for the next generation of pole top connections in favour of Pouyet and the ever inferior PSI Quante modules. (Egerton and BT had a patent dispute over that design)

Thank you ... the second I read your reply, I knew. ‘course I knew, what a 78 was.

Brain fart time.

I had recalled that the white chain meant lightning protection.

You’re right, they are a sound design, and once you got the adaptor for testing, sorted

Lightning protection had a very noticeable protruding module next to the screw.

White chain is onsite termination. Crimps in the back.

I fitted a lot of these as the boy on the gang when they first came out in the eighties.

Before I was ground down, I raised a 'new idea' on them as I found that their weakness was trapped pairs in the lid particularly when terminating aerial cable away. I suggested retro fitting drilling a small hole and fitting jumpering guides on maintenance visits.

Needless to say the product owners were not interested in ideas from 2 a penny jointers.. I used to subsequently fit strap cable fixing to the rear slots as a guide when I was faulting . smile

Luckily for all my pole climbing days are over nowadays so I can only bore on the older stuff. . .
