Oh well at least the fire I have jumped into is cheaper than the frying pan we were in. It sounds as is what you say is very likely and why support just didn’t respond to any thing about the up speed even though I did try getting a response on just that twice. Sounds like they know there was a problem but were not admitting it. Don’t think I am going to get them to reset my line to get the lower SNR back down.

ISPs cannot set the SNRM(argin) to low values such as 3dB, though I seem to recall they can ask for it to prevented from being set that low by DLM. (SNR is not what anyone is talking about). It is set automatically by the Openreach DLM following the product installation, according to the providers order, (see below).

There are few influences the the provider has.

Their initial order for your line can request one of three DLM stability settings from Openreach, Either indirectly through BT Wholesale if that's who they use, or directly as in Sky, TalkTalk and such who don't.

Those settings are named differently by Openreach and BTW, but basically come to more or less the same thing. Fast, Stable and Super Stable.

AIUI all ISPs always order the same one of those three for all of their customers, depending on their individual preference/business model.

The second influence once the line is up and running comes into play when DLM has applied some setting during live use that was needed during a fault or other disruptive period and fails for whatever reason to revert to "normal" after a while once the fault is fixed, or the disruption ceases.

At such a point they can ask for the DLM to be reset to the initial Openreach defaults. Maybe they can also request a change to the stability setting, I don't know, but which would presumably also set to the defaults for that setting.

Finally, (as far as I know, so there may be one or two more reasons for a reset), if an engineer fixes a fault that has caused a major effect on the DLM the engineer can request an immediate reset to the defaults for that connection. Saving the customer having to wait days/weeks/forever hoping it will recover automatically over time.

Thanks, my one was on 5 and synced on high 60/low 70. After the powere problems went to 6 and which is the defult, as I understand it, seting, and synced at about 60. This was about 2 months ago now, but maybe changing ISP's has reset that time if they say what level the line is set to. Eather way I don't see how I am going to get them to get me back down to 5 again if IDNet support are not intrested. At lest its cheeper than eclipse.

Sorry, I thought you were wanting 3dB margin, but what I posted also applies to wanting 5dB. IDNet simply can't request it.

When did you move to them? I'm wondering if it is just a matter of waiting a bit.

What you must not do is keep re-sync'ing to see if you get more speed or the lower noise margin. All you achieve is prevent DLM lowering SNRM setting to 5dB which would automatically cause a re-sync, at worst make it "band" the line because it thinks it is unstable. Banding fixes the sync at a lower figure than now and can take months to sort out.

We moved Tuesday 13th October but the changes happened on the Monday as my speed test went from 40 to 60 by early morning but we only changed the log on over on the Tuesday. The synch speeds never changed during this but our up speed dropped initially a lot, some 4-5Mb but down speeds jumped up to near what the sync speed was at just below 60Mb. Eclipse had been capping us so I don’t know what down speed we might have got when we were on SNR5 and a down sync speed of about 70Mb.
No I avoid rebooting the modem, I use a Vigor 130 so apart from when the washing machine caused power problems its never rebooted as the routers can be updated and rebooted behind it.
Broadband Availability Checker which I know isn’t the most accurate device has us on the lowest speed on 68.9 and a handback of 62.2. But I also know from people next door they are getting higher speed than this. So short of a faulty BT line (an engineer said he could find no problem at our place or back to the box) it would appear to be a problem in the fibre box. But getting anyone to deal with that isn’t going to be easy.

If thats effecting up would not it effect next door as well We were a stable SNR5 and sync on about 70 for well over a year untill the line problems.

Just to add to what Zarjaz said, just by being on a different pair within a multi-core cable to your neighbours can affect how much crosstalk you get and in turn what max speed is possible.

In reply to a post by john7:
In the last 3 days the up speed has returned to the speed under Eclipse on tests a different times of the day. No sign of changes on the sync speed so why this has now changed I have no idea.
That's interesting because I noticed a drop in upload speed last week (not a huge one - from 18Mb/s to 15Mb/s). Mine has also returned to normal recently so perhaps it's an IDNet issue.

After a local power cut my line is now at what the line was said to be able to do
Advance Test
Download Test
Download speed achieved during the test was 73.46 Mbps
For your connection, the acceptable range of speeds is 40 - 77.43 Mbps
IP Profile for your line is 77.43 Mbps
73.46 Mbps
77.43 Mbps
Upload Test
Upload speed achieved during the test was 20.16 Mbps
IP Profile for your line is 20 Mbps
