FTTP bandwidth capacity

Just curious how FTTP bandwidth capacity is managed in an exchange.

Hopefully I have the correct terminology, but I've seen people on here mention about the cablelinks?!? having a 2.4gbps capacity. Does that mean that if two people ordered a 900mbit package they'd consume almost all of that?

What happens if 10 people all suddenly ordered 900mbit packages in the same area? Is there always lots spare at the headend exchange or is it possible you'd have to wait whilst they install more equipment?

2.4 Gbps is shared between 32 households, so there are multiples of that arriving at the exchange

2 people with Gigabit on same 32 way PON is possible but would be rare.

Total capacity of the headend cabinet no idea, but providers buy 10 Gbps links to it now

Worth remembering that around 80% of those in Openreach FTTP only areas (eg new builds) will take out 80/20 or lower on FTTP. Therefore local bandwidth congestion won’t be an issue in most areas. Congestion is more common on the backhaul links which takes all aggregated adsl, vdsl and FTTP traffic in the same ‘pipes’.

So two of us from the same CBT have taken the 900 package and 1 person has taken the 300 package from the same CBT also.

Does that use up a lot then?

Only when all of you are maxing out your connections at the exact same time.
Most people use a little bandwidth and short burst periods.

You're never guaranteed anywhere near the 900Mb anyway.
For the majority these are sold as contended residential connections.

Some networks share the exact same bandwidth between 128 properties.

Anyone know what various altnets contend to, eg CityFibre, CommunityFibre etc?

Openreach publish a table (SIN 506 pages 3&4) which state the prioritised bandwidths for each of the services they offer to ISPs, anything above the prioritised rate up to the peak rate is not guaranteed - for example the 1000/220 service only prioritises 330/110.
